# ARK Color IDs: Every Survival Evolved Color and Dye ID (SetTargetDinoColor)

Every ARK color ID for ARK: Survival Evolved is on this page: the 100 creature colors (IDs 1 to 100), the 26 dye colors (IDs 201 to 226), and the special IDs 0 and 227. You use a color ID with `SetTargetDinoColor` to repaint a tame, or pass a list of them to `SpawnExactDino`. The names and values were checked against two independent sources, the official ARK wiki and color data extracted from the ASE game files (v358), and all 126 IDs agree.

The page covers ARK: Survival **Evolved** only. Survival Ascended numbers its dyes differently: Red Coloring is `212` in ASE but `131` in ASA. If an ID from another list gives the wrong shade, that list was probably written for ASA.

## How to Change a Dino's Color on Your Server

Recoloring is an admin command, so you need cheats enabled first. On a GameServerKings ARK server:

1. In the panel, open the **Startup** tab and set **Admin Password**. It ships as `PleaseChangeMe`, so change it before anything else. The panel only accepts letters, numbers, dashes and underscores here, from 1 to 100 characters.
2. Restart the server so the new password is used. The server reads it from its launch line at startup.
3. Join the server, press `Tab` to open the console and log in as admin:

``` title="In-game console"
enablecheats YourAdminPassword
```

4. Look straight at the creature, then set one region at a time:

``` title="SetTargetDinoColor syntax"
admincheat SetTargetDinoColor <region> <color ID>
```

A creature has up to six color regions, numbered `0` to `5`. To make a Rex white with a black spine and back:

``` title="Example: recolor a Rex"
admincheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 18 | admincheat SetTargetDinoColor 1 14 | admincheat SetTargetDinoColor 4 14
```

The vertical bar chains commands. Each one needs its own `admincheat`.

> [!IMPORTANT] Run it in-game, not from the panel Console
> `SetTargetDinoColor` acts on whatever is under your crosshair. The panel **Console** tab on a GSK ARK server is an RCON connection, and a remote session has no character or crosshair, so color commands have to be typed in-game.

Colors set this way can be inherited by babies, so a recolored breeding pair passes the new colors on.

### Which regions does each creature use?

Not every creature uses all six regions. Setting an unused region does nothing, which often explains a command that "doesn't work". The table below shows which regions some popular tames use in ASE, taken from the game's own color data. A dash means the region is unused. The names are only descriptions of the area each region covers.

## Creature Colors 1-56

IDs 1 to 36 have plain names. IDs 37 to 52, 55 and 56 keep the game's internal names (`BigFoot0`, `WyvernPurple1`, `NearBlack`), and most tools show them that way.

The hex codes are approximate. The game stores each color as a linear RGB value, and the hex shown here is the usual on-screen conversion, so treat it as a guide, not an exact match.

## Dye Colors 201-226

### Giving yourself dyes

To paint structures, saddles or armor with a paintbrush or spray painter, you need the dye items themselves. This gives you a stack of every dye in one go:

``` title="Every dye, 100 of each"
admincheat GiveColors 100
```

For just one dye, use its item ID or GFI code (see [ARK item IDs](/knowledge-base/ark-survival-evolved/ark-item-ids/) for the full list):

``` title="Give 50 Navy Coloring"
admincheat GiveItemNum 406 50 0 0
admincheat gfi Dye_Navy 50 0 0
```

| Dye item | Item ID | GFI code |
|---|---|---|
| Black Coloring | 64 | `Dye_Black` |
| Blue Coloring | 60 | `Dye_Blue` |
| Brick Coloring | 403 | `Dye_Brick` |
| Brown Coloring | 66 | `Dye_Brown` |
| Cantaloupe Coloring | 404 | `Dye_Cantaloupe` |
| Cyan Coloring | 67 | `Dye_Cyan` |
| Forest Coloring | 359 | `Dye_Forest` |
| Green Coloring | 59 | `Dye_Green` |
| Magenta Coloring | 402 | `Dye_ActuallyMagenta` |
| Mud Coloring | 405 | `Dye_Mud` |
| Navy Coloring | 406 | `Dye_Navy` |
| Olive Coloring | 407 | `Dye_Olive` |
| Orange Coloring | 63 | `Dye_Orange` |
| Parchment Coloring | 360 | `Dye_Parchment` |
| Pink Coloring | 361 | `Dye_Pink` |
| Purple Coloring | 62 | `Dye_Purple` |
| Purple Coloring | 68 | `Dye_Magenta` |
| Red Coloring | 58 | `Dye_Red` |
| Royalty Coloring | 362 | `Dye_Royalty` |
| Silver Coloring | 363 | `Dye_Silver` |
| Sky Coloring | 364 | `Dye_Sky` |
| Slate Coloring | 408 | `Dye_Slate` |
| Tan Coloring | 365 | use `GiveItemNum 365` |
| Tangerine Coloring | 366 | `Dye_Tangerine` |
| White Coloring | 65 | `Dye_White` |
| Yellow Coloring | 61 | `Dye_Yellow` |

The GFI code for Tan Coloring isn't listed because `Dye_Tan` also matches Tangerine Coloring. Use the item ID instead.

## Special Color IDs: 0, 36 and 227

- **0 means "unset".** It's normally only seen from mutations. Setting a region to `0` with a command has no visible effect until the creature has been through a cryopod or the server restarts. If you set *all six* regions to `0`, the game treats the colors as uninitialised and re-rolls every region the next time the creature is unpodded or the server restarts.
- **36 (Dino Albino)** is 50% brighter than white (18) in-game. No hex code can show that, so the table lists it as `#FFFFFF`.
- **227** isn't a defined color at all, but a coding mistake in ASE lets it appear through mutations. It shows as white.

## Spawning a Creature With Colors Already Set

`SetTargetDinoColor` recolors an existing creature. To spawn one with all six colors set in one command, ASE has `SpawnExactDino`, whose 16th argument is a comma-separated list of six color IDs (for example `"18,14,0,0,14,18"`). It's the most fragile spawn command in the game: a typo in the blueprint path can crash the server, and the colors only show after the creature has been through a cryopod. For most admins it's easier to spawn normally and then recolor. [ARK spawn commands](/knowledge-base/ark-survival-evolved/ark-spawn-commands/) covers both routes, with every ASE creature ID.

> [!CAUTION] Save before experimenting
> Run `saveworld` from the panel **Console** tab (no `cheat` prefix is needed there) before trying `SpawnExactDino` on a live server, and take a backup from the **Backups** tab. See [How to create a backup](/knowledge-base/general/how-to-create-a-backup/).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why does SetTargetDinoColor do nothing?

Usually one of three things: the region isn't used by that species (see the regions table above), your crosshair wasn't on the creature, or you left out the `admincheat` prefix on a multiplayer server. Setting a region to `0` also appears to do nothing until the creature is cryopodded or the server restarts.

### Do color IDs from ARK: Survival Ascended work on Evolved?

Only IDs 1 to 100 are shared. Ascended numbers its 127 dyes from 128 to 254, so any ID above 100 from an ASA list points to a different color, or none, on an ASE server.

### What's the highest color ID in ARK: Survival Evolved?

226 (Slate Coloring). Nothing from 101 to 200 is defined in ASE, and 227 only exists as a mutation bug.
