# Enshrouded Mods on a Dedicated Server: What Works and What 1.0 Breaks

Enshrouded mods exist, but not in the way most survival-game players expect. There is no official mod support, no Steam Workshop and no plugin framework for the dedicated server. Keen Games' own FAQ is careful about it: "at this stage, we cannot make promises that the game will be moddable, but it is something we would love to implement in the future."

What the community has built instead is a handful of unofficial routes, and they behave very differently on a dedicated server. Some are client-only and never touch the server. Some are just world saves. A few really do change how a server plays: bigger stacks, more chest slots, higher level caps, settings pushed past the limits `enshrouded_server.json` normally enforces.

This guide sorts the Enshrouded mods you will find on Nexus into what runs on a dedicated server and what does not. It covers the one route that works on a GameServerKings server today without any help from us, and what the 1.0 release on 15 October 2026 is likely to do to all of it.

> [!WARNING] Everything here is unofficial
> None of these tools come from Keen Games, and Keen do not support them. Every one of them works by patching or loading into a specific game build, and a game update can break it. Take a backup before you install anything. [Enshrouded server backups](/knowledge-base/enshrouded/backing-up-and-restoring-your-world/) covers how.

## What Kinds of Enshrouded Mods Exist

Nexus Mods lists 104 Enshrouded mods as of 28 September 2026. Sorted by endorsements, the top of the list is not what people expect: Cheat Engine tables, Reshade presets and downloadable world saves. The mods that change a dedicated server are a smaller group underneath them.

| Type | What it is | Runs on a dedicated server? | Works on a GSK server? |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Cheat Engine tables** (`.CT`) | Memory edits made on a player's own PC while the game is running | No. They are client-only | Not applicable |
| **Reshade presets** | Post-processing for brightness, colour and HDR | No. They are visual and client-only | Not applicable |
| **World saves** | Someone else's world (a sandbox, a storehouse, a prebuilt town), shared as save files | Yes. It is just a world | Yes: upload it like any world |
| **`.kfc` patchers** | Tools that rewrite the game's data archive: stack sizes, storage slots, level caps, settings limits | Yes, and most of their features are server-side | Yes: patch on your own PC, upload one file |
| **EML mods** | Lua mods loaded by the Enshrouded Mod Loader through a proxy `dbghelp.dll` | Yes, per the loader's docs | Needs a server-side setting we're rolling out. Contact support. See below |
| **Shroudtopia** | An older DLL mod loader with its own mod DLLs | Designed to, but pinned to old builds | Not recommended |

The two rows that matter for a server owner are the patchers and EML.

## Server-Side or Client-Side?

Enshrouded's multiplayer is largely server-authoritative, so a change to how the *world* behaves usually only needs to be made on the server. The author of EMBER, one of the larger EML mods, puts it plainly: "Enshrouded is primarily Server authoritative. This means when Ember is installed on a server it will affect all clients universally … If both Client and Server have EML/Ember installed the values present on the Server will override those of the Client."

The patcher authors say something similar, with an exception worth knowing: "Most of the features are server side (only server need to be modded) - except a few features requires modded client." In practice, the server applies the change, but an unmodded client may show the wrong number. The patcher's own notes say you need a modded client "to see the correct skill points text", for example.

So for most server mods your players install nothing. The exceptions are cosmetic or UI-level, and each mod's page says which features need the client too.

## Installing a `.kfc` Patch on Your GSK Server

This is the route that works on a GameServerKings server today with no startup changes. A patcher rewrites `enshrouded_server.kfc`, the dedicated server's data archive, which sits in the root of your server next to `enshrouded_server.exe`. The patcher is a Windows program, so you run it on your own PC against a local copy of the dedicated server and upload the result. The author of the most-used patcher describes exactly this for hosted servers: "download the Steam Dedicated files on your local, run the patch, then upload the modded kfc to your server."

1. **Install the dedicated server locally.** If you own Enshrouded, *Enshrouded Dedicated Server* is in your Steam library under **Tools**. You need the **Tools** filter turned on to see it. Let Steam finish updating it so your local copy is on the same build as your hosted server.
2. **Download a patcher** from its Nexus page (*Enshrouded Patcher*, or the older *More Stack Size – Storage Slots – QoL*) and follow its own instructions, pointing it at the local dedicated-server folder rather than your game folder. With *Enshrouded Patcher*, that means setting `gameDirectory` in its `config.json`, choosing your options, and running **Patch Fresh**. Both patchers keep a `.bak` copy of the original file.
3. **Stop your GSK server**, then take a snapshot from the **Backups** tab.
4. **Download your server's current `enshrouded_server.kfc`** from the File Manager and keep it. That is your one-click undo.
5. **Upload the patched `enshrouded_server.kfc`** to the server root, overwriting the original. It is a single file, so the File Manager is fine. [SFTP](/knowledge-base/general/how-to-upload-files-via-sftp/) works too.
6. **Check the Startup tab: Validate must be off.** Validate re-downloads Steam's own files on boot, and `enshrouded_server.kfc` is one of them, so Validate would put the original back. It ships off.
7. **Start the server** and wait for `[Session] 'HostOnline' (up)!` in the console before you join.

> [!IMPORTANT] Patch a clean file, once per game build
> Patchers read the archive they are pointed at, so start from an unmodified file. The Enshrouded Patcher's own warning: "DO NOT run Patch Fresh if you've already patched before and Game does not have any new update." After every game update, start again from a fresh, unmodified `enshrouded_server.kfc`.

Both patcher pages name only the `.kfc` archive as the file they change, and that's the only file these steps upload. If the patcher you use says it changes other files as well, upload those too, and keep the originals so you can undo it.

**To remove the patch**, stop the server, upload the original `enshrouded_server.kfc` you downloaded in step 4, and start again. That's the reliable undo. Turning **Validate** on for a single boot should also make Steam restore the original file (it only runs while **Auto Update** is on too), but uploading your own copy doesn't depend on it.

### What a patcher can change

The option list varies by patcher and version. The categories the current ones offer are stack sizes, storage and backpack slots, player and item level caps, skill points per level, altar limits and build limits, crop regrowth, fog-of-war range, crafting costs, and **uncapping the dedicated server settings**. That last one is specific to servers: `enshrouded_server.json` normally clamps every numeric `gameSettings` value to its allowed range, and the patcher raises those ceilings. [Enshrouded server settings and config file](/knowledge-base/enshrouded/configuration-overview/) lists the normal ranges.

> [!CAUTION] Some patcher changes are written into your world
> Not every change disappears when you remove the patch. The patcher author notes that the storage-slot change "persist[s] even if you remove the mod later". Chests rebuilt with extra slots stay that size in the save. That is harmless while the patch is on. How a future unmodded build treats a world full of oversized containers and 65,000-item stacks is not something anyone can promise.

## Using EML (Enshrouded Mod Loader) on a Server

EML is the most active modding project. It loads Lua mods from a `mods` folder, and its documentation says the proxy DLL "works for both client and server installations". At the moment it "only supports asset modifications before the game starts", which covers most balance and QoL mods but not runtime scripting.

On a Windows PC, installing it is simple: copy `dbghelp.dll` from the EML release into the game's root folder, and put mods in a `mods` folder beside it.

A hosted server needs one more thing. Your GameServerKings Enshrouded server runs the Windows `enshrouded_server.exe` under Proton, because Keen only ship a Windows server. EML's docs say that under Wine or Proton the proxy DLL "requires some additional setup": the server has to be launched with a DLL override, `WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dbghelp=native, builtin"`. That override belongs in the server's startup command, which you can't edit from the panel, and as of 28 September 2026 our Enshrouded servers don't set it. Without it, EML simply doesn't load. Nothing breaks, and nothing is modded either.

> [!IMPORTANT] EML needs a server-side setting we're rolling out
> We're adding that override to our Enshrouded servers, but it isn't on every server yet. If you want to use EML, contact support before you upload anything, and we'll tell you whether your server has it. Until then, the `.kfc` patcher route above is the one that works today.

Once your server has the override, follow EML's own instructions: upload `dbghelp.dll` to the server root, create a `mods` folder there, and upload the mods into it. EML creates an `eml.json` settings file the first time it runs. We haven't tested EML mods on one of our servers yet, so check the Console after the first boot, and contact support if your mods don't take effect.
<!-- LAUNCH-DAY / ops: when the WINEDLLOVERRIDES change is live on egg 130 for all servers (ops issue #15, blocked on #1), replace the IMPORTANT box with "EML works on our servers" only after a test boot with EML + one mod on a test server. -->

> [!NOTE] Shroudtopia
> Shroudtopia was the first Enshrouded mod loader and still shows up in guides. Its game-specific releases are tied to single game revisions (558123, 602428, 637515 and, most recently, 874630 in January 2026). That last one is older than Update 8, and the game has been on revision 1076226 since June. Newer versions of Shroudtopia read mods in the EML folder layout. Unless a mod you want names Shroudtopia specifically, EML is the loader to use, subject to the server setting described above.

## Installing a World Save From Nexus

The easiest "mod" to run on a server is a world someone else built: sandbox worlds with every block unlocked, storehouse worlds with every item, prebuilt towns around the starting area. These are ordinary Enshrouded world files. Nothing is patched, so they cannot break on an update any more than your own world can.

The server always loads world 1, whose files start with `3ad85aea`. Rename the downloaded files to that stem, stop the server, back up its current `savegame/` folder, and upload. [How to transfer your Enshrouded world to your dedicated server](/knowledge-base/enshrouded/transfer-your-world/) walks through the rename.

Characters are not part of a world. Keen state that character progression lives only on clients, so a downloaded world does not give anyone a modded character, and a world save cannot take your players' characters away either.

## Enshrouded Mods and 1.0

Enshrouded leaves Early Access on **15 October 2026**, and Keen confirmed that date again on Steam on 23 September. As of 28 September, Keen has confirmed new level caps and another skill tree reset for 1.0, and hasn't said anything about mods. Every unofficial mod will need to deal with the update, and the evidence of the last year points one way:

- **Patchers are undone by any game update.** The Enshrouded Patcher says it directly: "When Enshrouded receives a game update, the `.kfc` files are replaced with fresh originals." With **Auto Update** on, your server pulls 1.0 on its first restart after release and comes back vanilla. That is the safe way for it to fail. You then re-patch *only* once the patcher supports 1.0.
- **Loaders are version-sensitive.** Shroudtopia has shipped a separate build for each game revision it supported. EML is more tolerant because it patches assets rather than code, but a mod written against 0.9 data can still fail to apply, or apply wrongly, to 1.0 data.
- **The 1.0 changes touch exactly what mods tweak.** Keen's 23 September post lists new spells, reworked mana costs and casting times, a player level cap of 50 and gear up to 55, and another skill tree reset. A mod that sets its own level cap or skill-point rate was written against numbers that are about to change.
- **Official mod support has not been announced.** The FAQ line quoted at the top of this page is still the whole of Keen's position.
<!-- LAUNCH-DAY 15 Oct: read the 1.0 release changelog for any mention of mods, modding tools, Workshop or a changed server data format (.kfc). If Keen announce official support, rewrite this section and the intro. -->

### What to do before 15 October

1. **Take a backup of the modded world** before the update, and keep it after. The pre-1.0 copy is the only one guaranteed to load with the mods it was built with.
2. **Remove patches and EML before the update**, not after. Upload the original `enshrouded_server.kfc`, and move `dbghelp.dll` and `mods/` out of the server root. That way the first 1.0 boot is a clean, vanilla server you can trust.
3. **Let 1.0 install and confirm the world loads without mods.** If it does not, you know the problem is the game or the world, not a stale mod.
4. **Wait for each mod's own 1.0 release**, then reinstall one at a time. Check the mod's Nexus page or GitHub releases for a version that names 1.0 or a build newer than 15 October.
<!-- LAUNCH-DAY 15-22 Oct: check EML (github.com/Brabb3l/kfc-parser/releases), Enshrouded Patcher (Nexus 91), EMBER (Nexus 79) and Shroudtopia for 1.0-compatible releases; update this list with what works. -->

For the update itself, what to back up, and how to tell whether your world came through, see [How to update your Enshrouded server after a patch](/knowledge-base/enshrouded/updating-your-server-after-a-patch/).

## FAQ

### Does Enshrouded support mods?

Not officially. Keen's FAQ says they "cannot make promises that the game will be moddable". Community tools exist: `.kfc` patchers, the Lua-based Enshrouded Mod Loader (EML), the older Shroudtopia loader, Cheat Engine tables and shared world saves.

### Can I install mods on an Enshrouded dedicated server?

Yes, with unofficial tools. On a GameServerKings server, a `.kfc` patcher works without any help: patch a local copy of the dedicated server, then upload `enshrouded_server.kfc`. EML needs a Proton DLL override in the server's startup command. That's a server-side setting we're rolling out, so contact support before you try EML.

### Do players need the mods too?

Usually not. Most server-side changes apply to everyone who joins, because the server is authoritative. A few patcher features only display correctly on a modded client, such as skill-point text, and each mod's page lists them.

### Will my Enshrouded mods work after 1.0?

Assume not until the mod author says so. Any game update replaces the `.kfc` files, which undoes patches, and loaders and mods are built against specific game data. Remove them before 15 October, update to 1.0 clean, then reinstall versions that support 1.0.

### Are Cheat Engine tables server mods?

No. They edit the game in memory on the player's own PC. They cannot be installed on a dedicated server.

### How do I undo a patched server file?

Stop the server and upload the original `enshrouded_server.kfc` you kept. Turning **Validate** on for one boot (with Auto Update on) should also restore it. Turn Validate off again afterwards.
