# Best Level for Diamonds in Minecraft

Dig down to **Y = -59** and tunnel sideways. That is the answer for diamonds, it is still the answer in the current version, and it is the one figure on this page that most other guides get right.

Almost everything *around* it is wrong somewhere. The old "Y = 11" advice is two major versions out of date. The claim that iron is spread evenly is not what the generation data says — iron has three separate passes, one peaking at **Y = 232**, and a band between Y = 73 and Y = 79 where it never generates at all. And the reason -59 beats -64 is not diamond density, which is still climbing as you go deeper; it is bedrock.

So this page gives the short answer first, then what it hides: the real per-ore distribution, what the generation passes look like, and why diamonds cluster on the walls of flooded caves. The table further down uses measured world generation, not the configuration files — the two disagree.

> 26.2 ("Chaos Cubed") shipped on 16 June 2026 and is the current release. Ore distribution was last changed in **1.20.2**, when diamond was made more frequent in the deepslate layers; 26.1 and 26.2 did not touch it. 26.2 does add the sulfur caves biome underground, so you will meet a new cave type while mining, but it does not move any ore.

## The short answer

One thing to take away: get to Y = -59, dig a long straight tunnel, light it as you go.

## Why Y = -59 and not Y = -64

Diamond density keeps rising all the way down: the ore is more common as altitude decreases, and its passes run to the very bottom of the world. So why not go lower?

Because the bottom five layers are bedrock. Bedrock occupies **Y = -64 to Y = -60** in a rough, seed-dependent pattern: Y = -64 is solid flat bedrock everywhere, and the four layers above it are mostly bedrock with occasional gaps. So **Y = -59 is the deepest level you can tunnel through without constantly hitting bedrock you cannot break.**

That is the whole reason for the number. Measured against real generated worlds, diamond is most commonly found at **Y = -59 and Y = -58** — the layers combining near-maximum density with clean, minable stone. Redstone peaks in exactly the same place, so the tunnel pays twice.

> Stand at Y = -59 and your head is at Y = -58, so a normal two-high tunnel exposes both best layers at once with no extra work. The elaborate staircase-and-branch patterns some guides push are unnecessary.

## How diamond actually generates

Diamond is not one uniform sprinkle. It generates in **four separate passes per chunk**, and their shapes explain several things that otherwise look like bad luck:

- **7 blobs of 1–5 ore**, from Y = 16 down to Y = -63. 50% chance to skip any block that sits next to air.
- **1 blob of 1–23 ore** every ⅑ of a chunk, Y = 16 to Y = -63. 70% chance to skip blocks next to air.
- **4 blobs of 1–10 ore**, Y = 16 to Y = -63. Blocks next to air **never** generate.
- **2 blobs of 1–10 ore**, Y = -4 to Y = -63. 50% chance to skip blocks next to air.

Three things fall out of that list.

**Big veins are not a myth.** The second pass can place up to 23 diamond ore in one blob. It is rare — roughly one attempt per nine chunks — but a nine-diamond wall is a normal outcome, not a glitch.

**Caves are worse than they look.** Every pass penalises blocks next to air, and one refuses to place there at all. Scanning a big cavern's walls skips a large share of the diamonds solid stone would have kept. Cave-diving is fast; tunnelling finds ore the caves suppressed.

**Water and lava carry no penalty.** This is the rarely-reported part: the air-exposure rule does not cover water or lava, so diamond generates at full density right against them and **appears unusually often on aquifer walls** and in flooded caves. A flooded cave at Y = -55 is one of the best finds going.

Diamond also appears inside fossils below Y = 0, replacing some of the bone blocks.

## Ore distribution by Y-level: every Overworld ore

Measured figures from real world generation, not the maximums in the config files — terrain blocks ore from much of its theoretical range, so the two differ.

Emerald only generates in mountain biomes, and as scattered single blocks rather than blobs, which is why it feels rarer than its numbers suggest. The badlands gold row is a real extra pass: badlands get gold at altitudes no other biome does.

## Where to find iron

Iron is the ore most often described badly, because "iron is everywhere" is true enough to stop anyone checking the numbers. It generates in **three passes**:

- **10 attempts per chunk**, blobs of 0–5, spread **evenly** from Y = -64 to Y = 72.
- **10 attempts per chunk**, blobs of 0–13, from Y = -24 to Y = 56, **most common around Y = 16**.
- **90 attempts per chunk**, blobs of 0–13, from Y = 80 to Y = 384, **most common around Y = 232**.

That third pass is the one nobody mentions, and it has nine times the attempt rate of the other two combined. It is configured up to Y = 384 even though the Overworld stops at 320.

The catch is that Y = 232 is thin air across most of a world, and an attempt only succeeds where there is stone. In a **mountain biome** there *is* rock at that altitude, and exposed iron on a tall mountainside is genuinely abundant — often a stack of raw iron off a jagged peak without digging at all.

Underground the measured peak is **Y = 14**, where the second pass concentrates. And the dead zone is real: **no iron generates between Y = 73 and Y = 79**, the gap between the two ranges.

> Apart from ordinary blobs, iron also generates as huge branching **ore veins** of iron ore, blocks of raw iron and tuff. They generate **below Y = -8, reaching as deep as Y = -60**, and are thickest between **Y = -40 and Y = -28**. A single vein can hold over 2,000 ore blocks, and about 2% of its ore generates as full blocks of raw iron. Veins are part of cave generation, so caves and mineshafts carve through them — if you hit tuff and gravel snaking through the deepslate, follow it.

## The figures to stop trusting

Four pieces of widely-repeated advice that no longer match the game:

1. **"Diamonds at Y = 11" or "Y = 12".** Correct before 1.18, when the world floor was Y = 0. The floor moved to Y = -64 and the curve moved with it.
2. **"Iron is uniformly distributed."** Only one of its three passes is uniform; the other two peak, at Y = 16 and Y = 232.
3. **Distribution charts labelled "1.18–1.20.2".** Still the most-shared images on the subject, and they predate the 1.20.2 change that made diamond more frequent in the deepslate layers.
4. **"Branch mine with 3-block gaps."** The Y level in that advice is fine; the branch spacing is cargo cult. Blobs of 1–5 blocks mean tighter spacing finds more, and a two-high corridor at Y = -59 already covers both peak layers.

## Seeds, world generation and server-side notes

Ore distribution is fixed at world generation, so it is a property of your **seed**, not something you tune afterwards. The bedrock pattern at the bottom of the world is seed-dependent too, which is why some worlds give a cleaner run of stone at Y = -59 than others. A different spread means a different world — on a server, a reset rather than a config change.

The one thing worth doing server-side is **pre-generation**. Deep mining pushes players into fresh chunks constantly, and generating deepslate-layer chunks on demand is among the more expensive things a server does — a common cause of lag spikes on an otherwise healthy world. Pre-generating inside your world border turns that into a one-off cost.
