# Palworld Breeding Combos: Every Special Pair

Short answer: most pairs in Palworld follow a rank formula, but **around 80 specific parent pairings ignore it completely** and always return a fixed result. Those are the combos worth memorising, because they are how you get every subspecies in the game. Below is the full list, plus the two combos that depend on gender and the 24 Pals no mixed pair can ever produce.

> [!NOTE] Checked against Palworld **v1.0.4** (released 7 September 2026)
> Pocketpair's 1.0 notes state: *"Pal breeding combinations have been reviewed overall. We've adjusted them to provide an acquisition experience that matches game progression."* Several widely-copied recipes stopped working on 10 July 2026. Everything below is the 1.0 list.

## Every Special Combination

These pairs override the breeding rank formula. The order of the parents does not matter except where marked.

★ *The only two gender-dependent combinations in the game.*

Count them as parent pairings either way round and you get roughly 80 overrides sitting on top of the normal formula — a rounding error against the 44,849 possible pairs, but they cover almost every subspecies, which is why they carry so much of the value.

## The Two Combos That Care About Gender

Everywhere else in Palworld, gender only decides whether two Pals *can* breed. Two combinations are different:

- **Katress (female) + Wixen (male) → Katress Ignis**
- **Katress (male) + Wixen (female) → Wixen Noct**

Same two species, two different results, decided entirely by which one is male. If you get the wrong subspecies, you did not get unlucky — you had the genders round the other way. The Pal Surgery Table can change a Pal's gender if you would rather fix the parent than catch another.

## The 24 Pals No Mixed Pair Can Produce

**24 Paldeck Pals in 1.0 are same-species-only** — 26 if you also count Green Slime and Cave Bat, the Terraria collaboration Pals, which carry no Paldeck number. In the game's own `DT_PalCombiUnique` table each of them appears only as `X + X = X`. They are excluded from the nearest-rank pool entirely, so no pair of different species will ever hatch one. The only way to breed them is two of that exact species — which means catching two before you can breed any.

Aim a mixed pair at one of their ranks and the game quietly hands you the Pal on the next rung instead. Nothing tells you why.

| Group | Pals |
|---|---|
| **Legendaries** | Jetragon · Frostallion · Paladius · Necromus |
| **Tower bosses** | Grizzbolt · Orserk · Shadowbeak · Faleris · Lyleen |
| **Raid and Xeno bosses** | Bellanoir Libero · Xenovader · Xenogard · Xenolord |
| **Everything else** | Blazamut Ryu · Mimog · Bastigor · Selyne · Neptilius · Hartalis · Shaolong · Dandilord · Silvance · Panthalus · Astralym |

**Bellanoir is not on that list**, despite what you might expect — Bellanoir + Bellanoir Libero produces it, which is the special combination in the table above.

> [!WARNING] Seven of these changed at 1.0 — and the recipes still circulating are dead
> The five **Tower boss Pals** are the headline: Grizzbolt, Orserk, Shadowbeak, Faleris and Lyleen. All five were reachable from a mixed-species pair in early access, and every one of those recipes was removed on 10 July 2026. The wiki's breeding change log for Version 1.0 records it plainly: *"Tower Pals can no longer be bred with special combination."* **Bastigor** and **Selyne** changed the same way at the same time.

| Pal | Early-access recipe — **dead since 1.0** | How to get it now |
|---|---|---|
| **Grizzbolt** | Mossanda + Rayhound | Grizzbolt + Grizzbolt |
| **Orserk** | Grizzbolt + Relaxaurus | Orserk + Orserk |
| **Shadowbeak** | Kitsun + Astegon | Shadowbeak + Shadowbeak |
| **Faleris** | Vanwyrm + Anubis | Faleris + Faleris |
| **Lyleen** | Mossanda + Petallia | Lyleen + Lyleen |
| **Bastigor** | Frostallion + Anubis | Bastigor + Bastigor |
| **Selyne** | Paladius + Lunaris | Selyne + Selyne |

> [!NOTE] Check the date on anything you read, including the wiki
> The Palworld wiki's Breeding page correctly records that Tower Pals lost their special combinations — but its individual Pal pages still render the old early-access recipes alongside the new one. The biggest Palworld wiki currently contradicts itself on exactly this point, which is why every combination above is taken from the game's own data tables rather than from a community chart.

Note the distinction: those five Tower Pals can still be **parents**. Mossanda + Grizzbolt still gives Mossanda Lux, Lyleen + Menasting still gives Lyleen Noct, and Faleris + Jormuntide still gives Faleris Aqua. What changed is that you can no longer *produce* the Tower Pal itself from a mixed pair.

## Everything That Is Not On This Page

The other ~44,800 pairings follow the formula: average the two parents' hidden breeding ranks, hatch the Pal nearest that number. That is a lookup, not something to memorise — and it is what the [Palworld Breeding Calculator](/tools/palworld/breeding-calculator/) is for. It covers all 299 Pals and all 44,849 combinations, generated from the game's own data tables, and it works in both directions: give it two parents for the result, or give it a target Pal and it returns every pair that produces it.

The mechanic itself is explained in [Palworld Breeding Guide](/knowledge-base/palworld/palworld-breeding-guide/), and how to plan a multi-generation path is in [Palworld Breeding Chart](/knowledge-base/palworld/palworld-breeding-chart/).

Chasing a subspecies is a lot of eggs, and two of the numbers that decide how long that takes are world settings rather than game constants: `PalEggDefaultHatchingTime`, which Pocketpair describe as "Time to hatch a Huge Egg (hours)", and `MonsterFarmActionSpeedRate`, the ranch output rate that decides how fast you can bake the cakes. On a [dedicated Palworld server](/games/palworld/) both are yours — see [Palworld Dedicated Server World Settings Explained](/knowledge-base/palworld/world-settings/).

## Common Questions

### What are the best breeding combos in Palworld?

The special combinations above, because they are the only route to most subspecies. Beyond those, the best "combo" is whichever pair gets you down the rank ladder toward the Pal you actually want.

### Does it matter which parent is male?

Only for Katress and Wixen. Katress (F) + Wixen (M) gives Katress Ignis; reverse the genders and you get Wixen Noct. Every other pair in the game just needs one of each.

### Why doesn't my breeding combo work any more?

Most likely it predates 1.0. Pocketpair reviewed every breeding combination on 10 July 2026, and the recipes for the five Tower boss Pals — Grizzbolt, Orserk, Shadowbeak, Faleris and Lyleen — plus Bastigor and Selyne were removed entirely.

### How do I breed Orserk or Shadowbeak?

Two Orserks, or two Shadowbeaks. Both are same-species-only in 1.0, so you need a male and a female of the species before you can breed one at all. The early-access recipes — Grizzbolt + Relaxaurus for Orserk, Kitsun + Astegon for Shadowbeak — stopped working on 10 July 2026.

### Can you breed subspecies from their own kind?

Yes — two of the same subspecies always produce that subspecies. The special combinations exist so you can make one without owning one first.

### How many breeding combinations are there?

44,849 across 299 Pals. Roughly 80 of those parent pairings are hard-coded overrides, 24 Paldeck Pals are locked to same-species pairs, and everything else resolves through the rank formula.
