# Palworld Coal Locations and Mining Guide

Coal is the wall almost every Palworld player hits around level 30, because **Refined Ingots need it and nothing else substitutes.** The short answer: go to the **desert**. Coal rocks are concentrated in the Desiccated Dunes and around Duneshelter, with one early-access-friendly patch in the Twilight Dunes that sits almost on top of a fast travel point.

> [!IMPORTANT] You need a Pal with Mining Lv. 3
> Coal rocks require **Mining work suitability level 3** before a Pal will even attempt them, and a coal rock has 3,000 HP. A Digtoise (Mining 2) will not touch one. Bring a Pal at Mining 3 or higher, or break them yourself with a Metal Pickaxe or better.

## Where to Find Coal

These are the ten heaviest coal fields in the game data, with the fast travel point to warp to. The first row is the one to use if you are still under-levelled — it is only a short walk from the Anubis Dunes statue.

| Area | Coordinates | Coal rocks | Nearest fast travel | Walk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Twilight Dunes | -128, -96 | 21 | Anubis Dunes | very short |
| Duneshelter outskirts | 316, 385 | 24 | Duneshelter | short |
| Verdant Stream edge | 196, -76 | 24 | Mossanda Forest | short |
| Desiccated Dunes south | 625, 157 | 27 | Thirst's End | short |
| Isle of the Glacial Core approach | 356, 587 | 30 | Seaward Passage | medium |
| Sand Dunes | 319, 234 | 29 | Sand Dunes Entrance | medium |
| Desiccated Dunes west | 463, 303 | 32 | PIDF Tower Entrance | medium |
| Desiccated Dunes east | 604, 267 | 28 | PIDF Tower Entrance | medium |
| Deep Sand Dunes north | 474, 551 | 20 | Deep Sand Dunes | medium |
| Desiccated Dunes centre | 458, 429 | 28 | Deep Sand Dunes | long |

Coal rocks run on a **30-minute respawn**, so a loop of three or four of these fields refills behind you. There are also 33 larger **Coal Cluster** formations scattered across the same regions — the biggest sit near Dry Sandy Beach (-562, -698 and -712, -690) and in the Twilight Dunes at -126, -97.

> [!WARNING] The desert will cook you
> Every large coal field except the Verdant Stream patch is in the desert, which applies heat damage during the day and cold at night. Bring Heat Resistant armour, or farm at dawn and dusk. This is the real reason coal runs feel slow, not the mining.

## What Coal Is Used For

Coal exists for one primary purpose — it is the second half of the Refined Ingot — but 1.0 gave it three more homes.

| Recipe | Cost | Where / unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Refined Ingot | 2 Ore + 2 Coal | Improved Furnace, Technology Lv. 34 |
| Carbon Fiber | 2 Coal + 1 Flame Organ | Technology Lv. 35 |
| Coralum Ingot | 2 Coralum Ore + 5 Coal | Technology Lv. 62 |
| Thermal Core | 4 Flame Organ + 8 Coal + 2 Corrosive Solvent + 2 Hexolite | Technology Lv. 59 |
| Coal Mine (structure) | 70 Stone + 100 Coal + 30 Paldium Fragment + 10 Ancient Civilization Parts | Technology Lv. 37 |

The Refined Ingot line is what makes coal a bottleneck. Rifle Ammo, Assault Rifle Ammo, Shotgun Shells, the Refined Metal tool set, most mid-tier saddles and the entire Refined Metal armour tier all come off that one recipe, and each Refined Ingot burns 2 Coal.

## Farm It Passively With a Coal Mine

The single best fix for coal is to stop farming it. The **Coal Mine** base structure unlocks at **Technology Level 37** and produces Coal indefinitely from assigned Pals. It only needs **Mining level 1** to operate — a far lower bar than the level 3 that field rocks demand, so the Digtoise you already have can staff it.

The catch is the build cost: 100 Coal up front. That means one proper desert trip to bootstrap the structure, after which the desert becomes optional.

> [!TIP] Build it where the Pals are, not where the coal is
> A Coal Mine works anywhere. Put it at your main base next to your Improved Furnace and your ore production rather than building a second base in the desert just to be near rocks you no longer need.

## Pals That Drop Coal

Killing or capturing certain Pals returns coal without any mining at all, and two of them drop it in quantity.

| Pal | Coal per kill | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Blazamut | 10 | Mount Obsidian Trail, -737, -332 (Lv. 52) |
| Blazamut Ryu | 10 | Volcano region |
| Pierdon | 4–5 | Flamepulse Islet, 819, 467 (Lv. 50) |

Blazamut and Blazamut Ryu each drop **10 Coal at 100%**, including their Lv. 80 awakened versions — the best per-kill coal return in the game. Pierdon is the more interesting target though, because it drops 4–5 Coal *and* 4–5 Ore, which is exactly the Refined Ingot ratio.

**Desert expeditions** also return 20–40 Coal per successful run once your Pal Expedition Station is up, and the hard Desert and Forest variants return 10–20.

## Server Angle: Coal Is a Rate Problem

On a dedicated server, coal scarcity is a dial rather than a chore. Three `PalWorldSettings.ini` values change it directly:

- **`CollectionDropRate`** — how much coal a rock yields per break.
- **`CollectionObjectHpRate`** — coal rock health. Lower means fewer hits through that 3,000 HP.
- **`CollectionObjectRespawnSpeedRate`** — how fast rocks come back. Note the direction: a *higher* number means a *slower* respawn.

All three, with defaults and value types, are covered in [Palworld Dedicated Server World Settings Explained](/knowledge-base/palworld/world-settings/). Editing them is the one genuinely effective way to make a group server stop stalling at the Refined Ingot tier — and they live in a file you only control on your own [Palworld server](/games/palworld/).

## Common Questions

### Where is the easiest coal in Palworld?

The Twilight Dunes field at **-128, -96**, roughly a minute's walk from the Anubis Dunes fast travel statue. Twenty-one rocks, and it is the lowest-level desert area, so you can reach it well before the Desiccated Dunes.

### Can you get coal without going to the desert?

Yes. Build a Coal Mine at Technology Level 37, run Desert expeditions, or farm Blazamut in the volcano for 10 Coal per kill. There is also a smaller field at the Verdant Stream edge (196, -76) outside the desert entirely.

### Why can't my Pals mine coal?

Coal rocks need **Mining work suitability level 3**. Most early mining Pals cap at level 2 and will ignore coal entirely. The Coal Mine structure only needs level 1, which is why it is the better answer.

### How long does coal take to respawn?

Thirty minutes per rock.

### How much is coal worth?

20 Gold each, up from 3 Gold before the 1.0 release. Old early-access guides understate it by nearly 7x.
