# Project Zomboid Item IDs (Build 42) and How to Spawn Them

Project Zomboid item IDs take the form `Module.ItemName`, and in Build 42 every vanilla item lives in the `Base` module: `Base.Axe`, `Base.Bandage`, `Base.Generator`. That full string is what `/additem` and the admin Items List Viewer spawn. The name you see in your inventory will not work.

This page lists the IDs server owners ask for most, plus the naming traps and the Build 41 IDs that no longer exist. It was generated from the dedicated server's own script and translation files on the public branch, **Build 42.20 (42.20.4)**, on 27 September 2026. That build defines **5,092 item IDs**. You can search the complete list on your own server; the last section explains how.

## How to spawn an item with /additem

The syntax, as the game's own help text gives it:

```text
/additem "username" "module.item" count
```

```text
/additem "rj" Base.Axe 5
/additem Base.Bandage 10
```

- **In game chat** (press `T`), you can leave the username out and the item goes to you.
- **In the panel's Console tab**, type the command without the slash, and the username is required. The console has no player of its own, so the server replies `Pass username` if you leave it out.
- **Count is capped at 100.** If you ask for more, the server logs `Cannot spawn over 100 items at a time` and gives you 100.
- A wrong ID returns `Item Base.Whatever doesn't exist.` Type IDs exactly as listed here, capitals included (`Base.PickAxe`, not `Base.Pickaxe`).

`/additem` needs the **AddItem** capability. In the default roles, `admin` and `gm` hold it and `observer` does not. If you are not an admin yet, or your role cannot run it, start with [Project Zomboid admin commands and access levels](/knowledge-base/project-zomboid/how-to-add-admins-and-common-commands/).

> [!TIP] The Items List Viewer does the lookup for you
> In multiplayer, click the round **ADMIN** button on the left edge of the screen and open **Items List Viewer**. You can search it, and double-clicking an item adds it to your inventory; **Add Multiple** goes up to 100. It is enabled by the same AddItem capability, so if `/additem` works for you, so does the viewer.

## The inventory name is not the ID

Build 42 renamed a lot of items without renaming their IDs, so the obvious guess is often wrong:

| You want | Obvious guess | Real ID |
|---|---|---|
| Firefighter Axe | `Base.FireAxe` | `Base.Axe` |
| Spade | `Base.Spade` | `Base.Shovel` |
| Hacksaw | `Base.Hacksaw` | `Base.Saw` |
| Wood Saw | `Base.WoodSaw` | `Base.GardenSaw` |
| Flashlight | `Base.Flashlight` | `Base.HandTorch` |
| Flashlight - Heavy Duty | `Base.HeavyFlashlight` | `Base.Torch` |
| Can Opener | `Base.CanOpener` | `Base.TinOpener` |
| Painkillers | `Base.Painkillers` | `Base.Pills` |
| Gas Can | `Base.GasCan` | `Base.PetrolCan` |

Many names are shared, too. In 42.20, 428 display names belong to more than one ID. "Hunting Knife" is both `Base.HuntingKnife` and `Base.HuntingKnifeForged`, "Car Battery" is `Base.CarBattery1`, `2` and `3`, and "Paperback" covers 55 different IDs. When a name maps to several IDs, pick the one from the tables below or check the full list on your server.

## Build 41 IDs that no longer work

If a command from an older guide fails with `doesn't exist`, it is probably a Build 41 ID. Comparing the `legacy41` branch with 42.20, **238 of Build 41's 2,259 active item IDs are missing from 42.20.**

**49 of them only changed module.** Build 41 kept radios in `Radio`, farming items in `farming` and camping items in `camping`. Build 42 puts everything in `Base`, so `Radio.WalkieTalkie1` is now `Base.WalkieTalkie1`, `Radio.HamRadio1` is `Base.HamRadio1` and `farming.HandShovel` is `Base.HandShovel`.

**The other 189 are gone.** Build 42 has no replacement listed for them, so the right column below is the nearest 42.20 item, not an official rename:

| Build 41 ID | Nearest item in 42.20 |
|---|---|
| `Base.WaterBottleFull`, `Base.WaterPot`, `Base.BucketWaterFull` | No "full" variants exist. Only the container is left, e.g. `Base.WaterBottle`, `Base.Pot` |
| `Base.EmptyPetrolCan` | `Base.PetrolCan` (Gas Can), `Base.JerryCan` |
| `Base.BaseballBatNails` | `Base.BaseballBat_Nails` |
| `Base.PlankNail` | `Base.Plank_Nails` |
| `Base.TreeBranch` | `Base.TreeBranch2` |
| `Base.Stone` | `Base.Stone2` |
| `Base.WoodenStick` | `Base.WoodenStick2` (Wooden Rod) |
| `camping.CampingTentKit` | `Base.TentBlue_Packed` (also Yellow, Brown, Green) |
| `Base.223Bullets`, `Base.223Clip` | None. The .223 calibre is not in 42.20 |
| `Base.Chainsaw` | None |

If your server is on the `legacy41` branch, the Build 41 IDs still work there. [Project Zomboid multiplayer](/knowledge-base/project-zomboid/project-zomboid-multiplayer/) explains the branches.

Skill books follow one pattern, `Base.Book<Skill><1-5>`: `Base.BookCarpentry1` to `Base.BookCarpentry5`, for example. 42.20 has five volumes for each of these 24 skills: `Aiming`, `Blacksmith`, `Butchering`, `Carpentry`, `Carving`, `Cooking`, `Electrician`, `Farming`, `FirstAid`, `Fishing`, `FlintKnapping`, `Foraging`, `Glassmaking`, `Husbandry`, `LongBlade`, `Maintenance`, `Masonry`, `Mechanic`, `MetalWelding`, `Pottery`, `Reloading`, `Tailoring`, `Tracking` and `Trapping`.

Seeds are less regular. Loose seeds are `Base.<Crop>Seed` (`Base.TomatoSeed`) and most seed packets are `Base.<Crop>BagSeed` (`Base.CornBagSeed`). Seven packets end in `2`, though: `Base.TomatoBagSeed2`, `Base.CarrotBagSeed2`, `Base.PotatoBagSeed2`, `Base.CabbageBagSeed2`, `Base.BroccoliBagSeed2`, `Base.RedRadishBagSeed2` and `Base.StrewberrieBagSeed2` (Strawberry, spelled that way in the game files).

## Search the complete list on your own server

Your server already has all 5,092 IDs. The game files installed on it are the source this page was built from:

1. Open your server in the panel and go to **Files**.
2. Open `media/lua/shared/Translate/EN/ItemName.json`. Every line is one ID and its English name, like `"Base.Axe": "Firefighter Axe",`.
3. Use your browser's find (`Ctrl+F`) on the name you see in game. The text in front of it is the ID.

The item definitions themselves are in `media/scripts/generated/items/`, split by type (`weapon.txt`, `food.txt`, `clothing.txt` and so on), if you need to check what an item actually is.

> [!NOTE] Modded items use their mod's module
> A Workshop mod's items are not in `Base` unless the mod adds them there. The ID is `<ModModule>.<ItemName>`, taken from the `module` line of the mod's own script files. The Items List Viewer sorts every loaded item by module, so a mod's items appear under that mod's own module name, which is the easiest way to find them. For getting the mod onto the server in the first place, see [How to install mods for Project Zomboid](/knowledge-base/project-zomboid/how-to-install-mods/).

## FAQ

### What is the item ID format in Project Zomboid?

`Module.ItemName`, case-sensitive. Every vanilla Build 42 item is in the `Base` module, so the IDs look like `Base.Axe` or `Base.Bandage`.

### How do I spawn items in Project Zomboid multiplayer?

As an admin (or any role with the AddItem capability), type `/additem "username" "Base.Axe" 1` in chat, or use the **Items List Viewer** from the **ADMIN** button. From the panel console, drop the slash and always include the username.

### Why does /additem say the item doesn't exist?

Either the ID is a Build 41 ID that 42.20 removed or moved (see above), it is typed with the wrong capitals, or you used the display name instead of the ID.

### Can I spawn more than 100 items at once?

No. The server caps a single `/additem` at 100 and hands out 100 if you ask for more. Run it again for more.

### Are item IDs the same in single player?

The IDs are the same, because both come from the same script files. This page covers spawning them on a multiplayer server.
