Subnautica 2 Release Date: Early Access Is Out, 1.0 Is Years Away
Subnautica 2 hit Early Access on 14 May 2026; 1.0 is expected 2028-2029 with no date set. Plus the truth about Subnautica 2 dedicated servers.
Subnautica 2 is out. It entered Early Access on 14 May 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, at $29.99, and it has shipped two content updates since. If you arrived here looking for a date to wait for, the waiting is over — what remains is the 1.0 release, and that is years away rather than months.
This page covers what has actually shipped, what Unknown Worlds has and has not committed to, and the one question that brings most server owners here: whether Subnautica 2 has dedicated servers. The short answer to that last one is no, and the longer answer is worth reading before you rent anything.
The dates that matter
Early Access: 14 May 2026 — live now.
1.0 full release: no date announced. Unknown Worlds expect Early Access to run two to three years, which puts 1.0 somewhere around 2028–2029. That is an expectation, not a commitment.
What has shipped so far
| Update | Date | What it added |
|---|---|---|
| Early Access launch | 14 May 2026 | Co-op, the new world, updated survival systems |
| 1.1 — Adaptive Measures | 8 July 2026 | Creature behaviour and scanning changes, the Sonic Resonator, bio-mod and storage quality-of-life, base sprinting |
| 1.2 — Buddy System | 19 August 2026 | Cross-platform proximity voice chat, player revives, emotes, trading, avatar customisation |
The next update is described as adding a new region with creatures and resources, "later in the year." Beyond that, Unknown Worlds have talked about more biomes, leviathans, tools, a new vehicle and the second chapter of the story, without attaching dates to any of it.
Why there is still no 1.0 date
Subnautica 2 was originally intended for Early Access in 2025. Unknown Worlds delayed it to 2026 in a post published on 7 September 2025, saying they wanted the extra time for more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story and creatures before letting anyone in.
Since launch the studio's language has stayed deliberately loose — "focusing on delivering quality at a reasonable pace" — and the two-to-three-year Early Access estimate is the only timeline anyone has given. Treat any site quoting a specific 1.0 day as inventing it.
Does Subnautica 2 have dedicated servers?
No, and this is where a lot of misinformation sits.
Co-op in Subnautica 2 is host-based peer-to-peer. One player opens their save, becomes the host, and up to three others join — four players in total. The world runs on the host's machine, and it exists only while the host is in the game. When they log off, the world goes with them.
There is no separate server application. No dedicated server AppID on SteamCMD, no standalone server binary to install, and no IP and port for players to connect to.
"Subnautica 2 server hosting" is being sold anyway
Several hosts advertise Subnautica 2 dedicated servers. What is actually being rented is an always-on PC that runs a normal copy of the game and sits in the session as the peer host. It solves the availability problem — the world stays up when you go to bed — but it is not a dedicated server, it does not raise the four-player ceiling, and it is not something Unknown Worlds supports. Some hosts wrap this in a third-party framework and describe it as "real" dedicated hosting. It is not.
You will also find claims that dedicated servers are confirmed on the Early Access roadmap. As of 27 August 2026 that is not sourceable to Unknown Worlds: dedicated servers do not appear on the published roadmap, and the studio has not committed to them. It is a reasonable thing to hope for in a two-to-three-year Early Access period. It is not a promise, and nobody should buy anything on the strength of it.
What this means if you want to play with friends
The practical shape of co-op today:
- Four players maximum, host included. No setting raises this.
- The host's save is the world. Whoever hosts owns the file. If they stop playing, the group stops.
- Progress lives with the host, so joining a friend's world does not carry your own gear across.
- Cross-platform play works between PC and Xbox, and 1.2 added proximity voice chat across platforms.
- No always-on world without leaving a machine running the game.
If your group's problem is scheduling — nobody can play unless one specific person is online — then an always-on machine genuinely solves it, whether that is a spare PC at home or something rented. Just buy it understanding what it is.
FAQ
Is Subnautica 2 out?
Yes. Early Access since 14 May 2026 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, priced at $29.99. Buying during Early Access covers every update through to 1.0 and beyond.
When is the Subnautica 2 1.0 release date?
Unannounced. Unknown Worlds expect Early Access to last two to three years from May 2026, which points at 2028–2029. No specific date has been given, and the studio has been explicit that precise predictions are difficult.
Is Subnautica 2 on PS5?
Early Access launched on PC and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation has not been given a date.
How many players is Subnautica 2 co-op?
Four, including the host. There is no configuration that increases it.
Can I rent a Subnautica 2 dedicated server?
Not a real one — the game has no dedicated server software. What is sold under that name is an always-on machine acting as the peer host. It keeps a world available around the clock, but the four-player limit and the host-owns-the-save model both still apply.
Will Subnautica 2 get dedicated servers later?
Possibly, but nobody outside Unknown Worlds knows. They are absent from the published roadmap and the studio has not committed to them, despite what some hosting pages assert.
Does my single-player progress carry into a friend's world?
No. The world belongs to the host's save file, so you build within whatever world you join.
