Is Unturned Cross-Platform? Crossplay Explained
Unturned has no crossplay between PC and consoles, or between Xbox and PlayStation. What actually works, why it does not, and what it means for renting a server.
No. Unturned has no crossplay between PC and consoles, and none between Xbox and PlayStation. A PC player cannot join a console player's game, and a console player cannot join a PC server. The only cross-play that exists is between consoles in the same family — an Xbox One player can play with an Xbox Series X|S player, and the same holds on PlayStation.
This is not a feature that is coming. The reasons are structural, and they are worth understanding if you are deciding what to buy or where to put a server.
What runs where
| Platform | Release | Published by |
|---|---|---|
| Windows, macOS, Linux | 7 July 2017 (full release) | Smartly Dressed Games |
| Xbox One | 12 November 2020 | 505 Games |
| PlayStation 4 | 12 November 2020 | 505 Games |
| Nintendo Switch | 21 March 2024 | 505 Games |
The console releases play on newer hardware through backward compatibility, which is where the cross-generation play comes from.
Why there is no crossplay
They are different games with different publishers. The PC version is developed and published by Smartly Dressed Games. The console editions are published by 505 Games and are a separate product built from a modified version of the game. Two publishers, two release pipelines, two server pools.
The console versions are cut down. A large amount was changed to make Unturned work on a controller, and console builds update on their own schedule — they are frequently not at feature parity with PC.
Steam Workshop is the blocker. The PC version's identity is built on Workshop content: custom maps, items, vehicles, total conversions. Consoles have no route to that content. A console client joining a PC server would immediately hit content it cannot download and cannot render. This is the single hardest problem with the idea, and it is why crossplay is generally considered off the table rather than merely unimplemented.
"Unturned II" is a different question
Unturned II is a separate in-development title, not an update to Unturned 3. Nothing about its eventual platform or crossplay support tells you anything about the current game, and claims about crossplay "coming soon" usually stem from confusing the two.
What this means if you are renting a server
An Unturned server you rent runs the PC dedicated server. That means:
- PC players on Windows, macOS and Linux can all join. The client is cross-platform across desktop operating systems even though the server software is not.
- Console players cannot join, at all. There is no setting, no plugin, and no workaround.
- You can host the server on Linux and serve Windows players. Server OS and client OS are unrelated. GSK's Unturned servers run Linux and serve every desktop platform.
Server hosting is Windows and Linux only
There is no macOS build of the Unturned dedicated server, though macOS players can join servers normally. If you want to self-host, you need a Windows or Linux machine — see How to Make an Unturned Server.
If part of your group is on console, the honest answer is that they need the PC version to play with you. There is no way to bridge it. Once everyone is on PC, How to Play Unturned With Friends covers the quickest way to get a session running.
Playing across desktop platforms
Worth stating clearly because it is the good news buried under all the "no": Unturned's PC version is genuinely cross-platform across Windows, macOS and Linux. Everyone buys the same game on Steam, joins the same servers, and uses the same Workshop content. A Linux player and a Windows player share a server without configuration.
Can console players use dedicated servers at all?
Not in the way PC players can. Custom dedicated server hosting is a PC feature — the WorkshopDownloadConfig.json, Commands.dat and plugin frameworks that this knowledge base documents are all part of the PC dedicated server tool. Console editions use their own matchmaking and have no equivalent of renting a configurable server.
FAQ
Is Unturned cross-platform?
Between Windows, macOS and Linux, yes — they are the same PC version and share servers. Between PC and consoles, no. Between Xbox and PlayStation, no.
Is Unturned crossplay between Xbox and PC?
No. They are separate releases from separate publishers running on separate server pools.
Can Xbox and PlayStation players play Unturned together?
No. Cross-play only works within a console family — Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S, or PS4 with its backward-compatible successors.
Will Unturned ever get crossplay?
There is no indication that it will. The console and PC versions are different products from different publishers, and Steam Workshop content — central to the PC version — cannot be delivered to consoles.
Can console players join my rented Unturned server?
No. Rented servers run the PC dedicated server, which console editions cannot connect to.
Does the server's operating system affect who can join?
No. A Linux server serves Windows, macOS and Linux players identically. Only the client platform matters for compatibility, and all desktop clients are compatible with each other.
