Vintage Story Teleport Command: /tp, Waypoints and Spawn Points
How the Vintage Story /tp and /tpwp commands work, the three coordinate formats, letting players teleport, spawn points and translocators.
The Vintage Story teleport command is /tp. It moves you to coordinates or to another player, and /tpwp jumps you to one of your map waypoints. Both need the tp privilege, which only the admin role has on a new server. Most "teleport doesn't work" reports come down to that privilege, or to mixing up the three coordinate formats the command accepts.
This page covers every teleport command in version 1.22.7, how to read the coordinates correctly, how to let non-admins teleport, and the related tools: spawn points, temporal gears and translocators. For the full command list, see Vintage Story Server Commands: Full List and Privileges.
/tp Syntax
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/tp <x> <y> <z> |
Teleport yourself to coordinates as shown on the coordinate HUD |
/tp =<x> <y> =<z> |
Teleport to absolute world coordinates, as on the Ctrl+F3 debug screen |
/tp ~<x> ~<y> ~<z> |
Teleport relative to where you stand. ~0 ~20 ~0 puts you 20 blocks up |
/tp <player> |
Teleport yourself to another player |
/tp <player> <x> <y> <z> |
Send another player to coordinates |
/tpwp <name> |
Teleport to your own waypoint whose name starts with <name> |
You can mix formats within one command. /tp 1200 ~0 -340 keeps your current height and moves you horizontally.
Reading Coordinates Correctly
Vintage Story shows two coordinate systems, and /tp treats them differently:
- HUD coordinates (the plain
x y zform) are relative to the world's spawn point. Spawn is0, 0, so negative numbers are normal. This is what the coordinate display and the world map show. - Absolute coordinates (the
=xform) start at the world's corner. On a default 1,000,000-block world, spawn is at absolute500000, 500000.
The y value is absolute by default in every form, measured from the bottom of the world, so /tp 0 120 0 means height 120, not 120 above spawn. The wiki's own example is /tp =0 50 =0.
To grab exact numbers, the client command .cp aposi copies your absolute position to the clipboard as X=…,Y=…,Z=…, and .cp posi copies the position of the block below you. Paste the result into a note, then build the /tp command from it.
Coordinates can be switched off
Two world settings hide coordinates from players:
allowCoordinateHudandallowMap. If they'refalse, players can't read positions to teleport to, but admins can still use/tpwith numbers they get elsewhere. Check with/worldconfig allowCoordinateHud.
Teleporting With Waypoints
Waypoints are the easiest way to save a location and return to it later. Any player with the chat privilege (everyone, by default) can make them. Only /tpwp needs tp.
/waypoint add gold Home base
/waypoint list
/tpwp Home | Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/waypoint add <color> <title> |
Waypoint at your position. Color is a .NET color name or hex code |
/waypoint addat <x y z> <pinned> <color> <title> |
Waypoint at given coordinates |
/waypoint list |
Your waypoints with their id numbers |
/waypoint modify <id> <color> <icon> <pinned> <title> |
Change one |
/waypoint remove <id> |
Delete one |
/waypoint deathwp true |
Automatically add a waypoint where you die |
/tpwp matches the start of the title, ignoring case, and takes the first match it finds, so give waypoints distinct first words. "Home base" and "Home mine" both match home. It searches only your own waypoints, so you can't jump to someone else's. If the world has allowMap set to false, /waypoint add is refused too.
deathwp combined with /tpwp is the standard way to recover a lost inventory. Turn on death waypoints once and every death leaves a marker you can teleport back to.
Letting Players Teleport
tp is a single privilege. Anyone who has it can use every /tp form, including sending other players around. Grant it narrowly:
/player Alice privilege grant tp /role crplayer privilege grant tp Revoke with privilege revoke tp. Granting tp to suplayer, the default survival role, gives every new player free teleport and makes travel pointless on a survival server. A waypoint-teleport mod is usually a better fit for that goal. See How to install mods for Vintage Story.
To make yourself admin in the first place, run /op YourName from the panel's Console tab. Article 425 explains why the first grant has to come from the console.
Running /tp From the Console
The panel's Console tab runs commands as "Console Admin", which has every privilege but no player body, so /tp <x> <y> <z> has nobody to move. From the console, always name the target: /tp Alice 0 120 0 or /tp Alice Bob. Waypoint commands (/waypoint, /tpwp) belong to a player and have to be typed in-game.
Spawn Points
Several commands teleport players indirectly, by changing where they appear after joining or dying:
| Command or setting | Effect |
|---|---|
/serverconfig setspawnhere |
Default world spawn at your position |
/serverconfig defaultspawn <x> [y] <z> |
Default spawn at coordinates. Leave out y to use the surface |
/role <role> spawnpoint <x> [y] <z> |
Separate spawn for everyone with that role, such as a visitor lobby |
/worldconfig spawnRadius <blocks> |
How far from world spawn new players scatter. Defaults to 50 if unset |
/worldconfig temporalGearRespawnUses <n> |
How often a temporal-gear spawn point can be used. -1 is unlimited. 0 stops temporal gears setting a spawn point |
Changing the default spawn needs the setspawn privilege. Most /serverconfig changes take effect after a restart, so run /autosavenow and then restart from the panel.
Temporal gears are the survival way to set a personal respawn point. Hold the use button with a gear in hand while looking at a block, and your spawn is saved at your position. The number of respawns it grants comes from temporalGearRespawnUses.
Translocators
Translocators are the ruined teleporters found in the world. Players repair one, and it links to another somewhere far away. Admins can set a translocator's destination directly:
/settlpos l[] <target x> <target y> <target z> l[] means "the translocator I'm looking at". The command also repairs a broken translocator and activates it. Add true at the end to make the target relative to the translocator instead of a fixed position. It needs the setspawn privilege, not tp.
Troubleshooting
- A permission error on
/tpor/tpwp: you needtp. Check with/player YourName privilege. - You land underground or high in the air: you passed a HUD height as if it were relative. Y is absolute. Use
~0to keep your current height. - You end up hundreds of thousands of blocks away: you used
=xabsolute coordinates with numbers read from the HUD, or the other way round. /tpwpreplies "No such waypoint found": the name must match the start of your waypoint title, and it only searches your own waypoints. Run/waypoint listto check.
