Is DayZ Crossplay? Steam, Xbox and PlayStation Explained
DayZ has no general crossplay. Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC build share a pool; Steam PC and PlayStation are sealed off. What that means for renting a server.
Short answer: almost none. After more than a decade, DayZ still has no general crossplay. PlayStation is its own sealed world, and the Steam version you buy on PC cannot play with consoles at all. There is exactly one bridge, and it is inside Microsoft's ecosystem.
The one pairing that works
Xbox and the Microsoft Store / PC Game Pass version of DayZ share a server pool. That is Xbox Play Anywhere doing the work, not crossplay in the usual sense — and on the PC side you are limited to keyboard-and-mouse servers. Steam PC and PlayStation are not part of it.
That distinction matters more than it sounds, because the DayZ most PC players own is the Steam one, and the Steam build talks to nothing but other Steam builds. If you are reading this to work out whether your friend on PS5 can join your PC server, the answer is no, and there is no setting that changes it.
Is DayZ Cross-Platform?
Not in general. DayZ runs three effectively separate populations:
- Steam (PC) — its own server pool, its own update cadence, and the version every PC dedicated server runs. No console player can reach it.
- Xbox + Microsoft Store / Game Pass PC — one shared pool. Buying DayZ on Xbox grants the Windows version through Play Anywhere, and both connect to the same servers. PC players in this pool are restricted to keyboard-and-mouse servers.
- PlayStation 4 / PS5 — completely isolated. PlayStation players see PlayStation servers and nothing else.
Quick facts
General crossplay: No. Steam PC ↔ console: No. Xbox ↔ Microsoft Store PC: Yes, shared pool. PlayStation ↔ anything: No. Cross-progression: No — characters are per-platform and stored server-side.
Which Platforms Can Play Together
| Can play with → | Steam (PC) | MS Store / Game Pass PC | Xbox | PlayStation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam (PC) | ✓ | ✗ | ✗ | ✗ |
| MS Store / Game Pass PC | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| Xbox | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ | ✗ |
| PlayStation | ✗ | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
Two PC players can own DayZ and still be unable to play together, if one bought it on Steam and the other through Game Pass. It is the single most common surprise in this whole topic.
What This Means For Renting a Server
This is the part most crossplay pages leave out, so it is worth being direct about it.
Our DayZ servers are Steam PC servers. They run the DayZ dedicated server build, and the people who can join them are players on the Steam version. That is the large majority of the PC community and the entire modded scene — but it does not include Xbox, PlayStation, or the Microsoft Store build.
Console DayZ servers cannot be rented from us, or from most hosts. Bohemia runs private console servers through a single official partner, so if your group plays on PS5 or Xbox, a third-party host is not an option for you — including this one. We would rather say that here than take an order that cannot work.
Mods are a PC-only concept in DayZ
Console DayZ has no Workshop and no mod loading. Every mod guide you find, including ours, applies to the Steam PC version. If your group is on console, the server you get is vanilla — that is a property of the platform, not of the host.
Why There Is No Crossplay
Bohemia has never shipped general crossplay for DayZ, and the shape of the game explains most of it:
- The builds move at different speeds. Steam, the Microsoft ecosystem and PlayStation update on separate schedules. DayZ servers enforce an exact version match — a client one patch out of step is refused — so pools that patch on different days cannot share servers even if the networking allowed it.
- Mods would have to be solved. A large share of PC DayZ is modded, and consoles have no mechanism to download and run those mods. A shared pool would immediately split into "servers consoles can see" and "servers they cannot".
- Input parity. Where Microsoft did bridge Xbox and PC, it came with a keyboard-and-mouse restriction on the PC side — a hint at how carefully the input question has to be handled in a game this punishing.
Common Questions
Can PS5 and Xbox players play together?
No. PlayStation is isolated from every other platform, Xbox included.
I have DayZ on Game Pass. Can I join my friend's Steam server?
No. The Game Pass / Microsoft Store build lives in the Xbox pool. To join a Steam server — including one you rent from us — you need the Steam version.
Is crossplay coming?
Nothing has been announced. Bohemia's own update announcements for the current release line do not mention it. Treat any date you see elsewhere as a rumour.
Does my character transfer between platforms?
No. DayZ characters live on the server, so they do not travel with you at all — let alone across platforms.
Can I at least run one server that both PC and Xbox see?
No. There is no server configuration that joins the Steam pool to the Xbox pool.

Your own DayZ server is a world that stays up when you log off — nobody has to host it from their own PC, and it's there whenever your group wants to play.
