Stardew Valley Cheats and Console Commands (SMAPI, Debug and Chat)
The Stardew Valley cheats that actually work: SMAPI console commands, debug commands, chat cheats, the name trick, and what changes on a co-op server.
Stardew Valley has no cheat codes in the classic sense. If you type cheat, rosebud, freeGold or showMeTheMoney into the chat box, the game just shows a "nice try" message from ConcernedApe. The real Stardew Valley cheats and console commands come from four places: SMAPI's console, the game's hidden debug commands, a chat-cheat switch buried in the save file, and one naming trick that works in the unmodded game.
This page lists what each one does. It also covers what changes on a co-op server, where the console you type into belongs to the host character and not to you. That difference decides whether a command gives you 10,000g or gives it to an invisible bot.
Back up before you cheat
The wiki's own warning on console commands: "They can have permanent side-effects on your save data, break your save, or have other unintended effects." On a server, take a backup first.
The four ways to cheat in Stardew Valley
| Method | Needs mods? | Where you type it | Affects |
|---|---|---|---|
SMAPI console commands (player_add, world_settime…) |
SMAPI (its Console Commands mod is included) | The SMAPI console window | The player running that copy of the game |
Debug commands (debug <command>) |
SMAPI | The SMAPI console window | Same as above |
Chat cheats (/money, /debug …) |
No | In-game chat, once cheats are switched on for the save | The player typing |
| Item-ID name trick | No | Your character's name | You, whenever an NPC says your name |
A fifth option, the CJB Cheats Menu mod, gives you a point-and-click menu (press P) instead of commands. It comes up again in the server section below.
SMAPI console commands
With SMAPI installed, the black console window next to the game accepts commands. Type help to list them all, including commands added by other mods, or help <command> for one command's syntax. The commands come from Console Commands, a mod bundled with SMAPI; the SMAPI installer adds it automatically.
The ones people actually use:
| Command | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
list_items <search> |
Finds item names and IDs | list_items iridium |
player_add name "<item>" [count] [quality] |
Adds an item by name. Quality 0 normal, 1 silver, 2 gold, 4 iridium |
player_add name "Stir Fry" 10 4 |
player_add <item ID> [count] [quality] |
Adds an item by ID | player_add (O)128 10 4 (10 iridium pufferfish) |
player_setmoney <amount> |
Sets your gold | player_setmoney 50000 |
player_sethealth / player_setstamina |
Sets current health or energy | player_setstamina 270 |
player_setmaxhealth / player_setmaxstamina |
Raises the permanent maximum | player_setmaxstamina 500 |
world_settime <time> |
Sets the clock, from 0600 to 2600 (2am) |
world_settime 0800 |
world_freezetime [0/1] |
Stops (1) or resumes (0) the clock | world_freezetime 1 |
world_setday / world_setseason / world_setyear |
Changes the date | world_setseason summer |
world_setminelevel <level> |
Warps to a mine floor. 121+ is the Skull Cavern | world_setminelevel 100 |
hurry_all |
Warps every NPC to where their schedule says | hurry_all |
Debug commands
The game itself contains hundreds of developer commands. In SMAPI's console, put debug in front of them:
debug where Robin
> Robin is at Farm, 21,4 These are the riskiest commands of all. The wiki warns that they "may crash your game, permanently corrupt or break your save." Two behaviours to know in co-op: some debug commands only work for the host, such as finishing buildings under construction or switching between shared and separate money. And many print nothing, so SMAPI replies "Sent debug command to the game, but there was no output."
Chat cheats without SMAPI
The unmodded game can run cheats from the chat box once they're switched on for a save. The wiki gives two ways:
- Edit the save file, find
<allowChatCheats>and set it totrue, then load the save. Or - If you have SMAPI, type
debug toggleCheatsin its console.
After that, these work in chat:
/money 5000sets your gold./debug <command>runs any debug command, for example/debug itemNamed pufferfish.
The item-ID name trick
This one needs nothing installed and works on PC and mobile. Put item IDs in square brackets in your character's name, for example [645][499][(O)163]. Every time an NPC says your name, you receive those items (in that example, an Iridium Sprinkler, Ancient Seeds and a Legend). Qualified IDs like (O)163 mean it works for furniture and weapons too. You can find IDs with list_items, or on the wiki.
A farmhand chooses their name when they first join a cabin, so this also works on someone else's farm.
Cheats on a Stardew Valley server
On a GameServerKings Stardew server, the Console tab in the panel shows the SMAPI console of the server's own copy of the game, and the panel marks the server as running when SMAPI prints Type 'help' for help. We haven't yet tested typing commands there on a live server, so type help first: if it lists commands, the console is taking input. If nothing comes back, contact support rather than retrying commands. The server's copy of the game is the farm's host, a character played by the Always On Server mod and hidden away by AutoHideHost. So:
| You type in the panel console… | What happens |
|---|---|
world_settime, world_setseason, world_setday, world_freezetime |
Changes the world for everyone |
player_add … |
Items go into the hidden host's inventory, not yours |
player_setmoney … |
Sets the host's gold. If the farm uses shared money, that's everyone's wallet. With separate money, only the host's |
debug … host-only commands |
Run with host rights, for example finishing buildings under construction |
Be careful with time commands on a server
Always On Server decides when to sleep, go to festivals and skip cutscenes based on the clock. Its author warns: "Anything that messes with the game time/date is likely to cause issues since everything the bot does is triggered off timing." Freezing or jumping the clock can leave the host stuck. If that happens, any player can type
!sleepor!unstickin chat.
Cheating for your own character
For anything personal (items, your own gold with separate money, skills, speed), cheat on your own PC, not the server:
- CJB Cheats Menu. Install it with SMAPI on your PC and press P in game. Its author says "all the cheats should work in multiplayer (except changing the time if you're a farmhand). The mod is local, so it's fine if only some players have it." It doesn't need to be on the server. Some of its cheats affect everyone: world changes, instant buildings, fast machines, money when the wallet is shared, and weather.
- The name trick above, when you create your farmhand.
- SMAPI's console on your own PC.
player_addand the other player commands apply to your character, because that console belongs to your copy of the game.
Commands that aren't cheats but help on a server
These are normal chat commands for the host, from the in-game chat. On the server the host is the bot, so type them in chat over the VNC screen (set your own VNC Password before you turn VNC on, because the installer's default is public):
/kick <name>and/ban <name>//unban <name>//unbanAll/unlinkPlayer <name>, which frees a character stuck with "this character belongs to another player"/moveBuildingPermission off|owned|on, which controls whether farmhands can move buildings/pauseand/resume
Any player can use /list to see who's online and /ping to check their connection.
