VEIN Mods: How to Install Them (and What Works on a Server)

How to install VEIN pak and UE4SS mods from Nexus, what a dedicated server needs, and the server settings that replace common mods.

Updated September 28, 2026
VEIN

VEIN mods exist, but none of them come from Ramjet Studios. There's no Steam Workshop for VEIN and no built-in mod menu. Every VEIN mod is community-made, most of them hosted on Nexus Mods (148 of them when we checked in September 2026). Since 0.024 Hotfix 2 the game even shows a warning when it detects mods. So installing VEIN mods means dropping files into the game folder yourself and accepting that the next patch may break them.

This guide covers the two kinds of VEIN mod you'll find, how to install each one on your PC, what changes when you want mods on a dedicated server, and which "mods" you can replace with VEIN's own server settings.

Checked against

VEIN 0.025 (26 September 2026) and the Nexus Mods listings for VEIN on the same day. VEIN is in Early Access and gets several hotfixes a month, so check a mod's page for the game version it was built for before you install it.

Where VEIN modding stands

Ramjet's position is simple: mods are unofficial, and old ones crash. The 0.022 Hotfix 15 notes put it like this: "if you have any mods installed that you haven't updated, you will crash - please be mindful of this."

Official mod support is on the roadmap, but it's a long way off. In March 2026 the lead developer wrote that they had "done a little bit of work on modding. Don't get too excited, as we're still super early with this work, and it isn't a high priority at all." The plan is to move game data into text files that mods can edit, and some of that has started (radio stations were "de-hardcoded" in May 2026 with modding in mind). Until that lands, everything below is unofficial.

The two kinds of VEIN mods

Type What you download Where it goes (Steam install) Typical mods
Pak mod One .pak file, or a .pak + .utoc + .ucas set, name usually ending in _P ...\steamapps\common\Vein\Vein\Content\Paks Bigger backpacks and storage, stack sizes, perk/XP multipliers, lockpicking tweaks, translations
UE4SS mod A folder of Lua scripts, and it needs UE4SS installed first ...\Vein\Vein\Binaries\Win64\ue4ss\Mods Move Everything, Custom Container Weights, Item Modifier

UE4SS is a third-party script loader for Unreal Engine games. The author of the prepackaged VEIN build on Nexus notes that "Mods for VEIN must be run with the experimental version of UE4SS", not the stable release. That's why most VEIN UE4SS mods tell you to install their bundled copy.

Installing VEIN mods on your PC

  1. In Steam, right-click VEIN, then Manage > Browse local files. This opens the Vein install folder.
  2. Pak mods: extract the archive and copy the .pak file (plus any .utoc/.ucas files with the same name) into Vein\Content\Paks. Don't delete or rename the game's own paks in that folder.
  3. UE4SS mods: first extract the VEIN build of UE4SS into Vein\Binaries\Win64, so that a ue4ss folder appears next to the game's executable. Then extract each mod into Vein\Binaries\Win64\ue4ss\Mods.
  4. Start the game. If it crashes on launch, remove the newest mod first.

To uninstall, delete the files you added. If you deleted something by mistake, use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files to restore VEIN's own files.

Only install one mod per job. Several authors ship "slight / significant / massive" versions of the same pak, or bundle old mods into a megapack. Two paks that change the same container or item conflict, and the megapack's author says outright that they don't test combinations.

VEIN mods on a dedicated server

Playing on a server changes things, because the server decides most of what these mods touch: carry weight, container sizes, stack sizes, XP. A mod that only exists on your PC can show you a bigger backpack that the server doesn't honour.

Here's what mod authors say about multiplayer:

  • UE4SS mods: "In order to work ServerSide all clients will require to have the mod installed." (from the Move Everything, Custom Container Weights and Item Modifier pages).
  • Pak mods: most authors haven't tested them in multiplayer. One wrote "No idea! … I imagine it will need to be run on the Client and the Server to work." Assume every player and the server need the same file at the same version.
  • Translations and purely visual mods only change what you see on your own screen, so they should be fine on your PC alone.

On a GameServerKings server

Your VEIN server runs the Linux dedicated server build (Vein/Binaries/Linux/VeinServer-Linux-Test), not the Windows game. That decides what you can install:

  • UE4SS mods can't run on it. They install into Binaries\Win64, which is part of the Windows game. The Linux server has no Win64 folder for them to go in.
  • Pak mods may work. The server's content folder is Vein/Content/Paks, the same layout as your PC. We haven't tested a pak mod on one of our VEIN servers yet, so treat this as an experiment:
  1. Stop the server and take a backup.
  2. Open Files (or connect over SFTP) and go to Vein/Content/Paks.
  3. Upload the same .pak file (and its .utoc/.ucas, if it has them) that every player has installed.
  4. Start the server, join, and check whether the change took effect, for example the new stack size.

If the server won't start, or the change doesn't show up, delete the files you uploaded and start again. Contact support if you'd like us to take a look.

After every VEIN update

VEIN patches often, and pak mods are built for one game version. The 0.023 Hotfix 4 megapack on Nexus, for example, was made for that exact version. 0.025 reworked building upkeep, the utility cabinet and zombies, so expect older paks to break with it.

  • Your server's Auto update setting (Startup tab, on by default) updates VEIN every time the server starts. Players' Steam clients update too. So when a patch lands, remove any mods that haven't been updated for it, on your PC and on the server.
  • Switching Auto update off isn't a fix. Your players' Steam clients still update, and you'd be holding the server back on an old build.
  • Update your mods from their Nexus pages, not from old copies in your downloads folder.

You may not need a mod at all

Many popular VEIN mods only change numbers that VEIN already exposes as server settings. XP gain, loot scarcity, zombie spawn caps, infection chance, PvP, permadeath, how fast time passes and how fast empty containers refill are all vein.* console variables. Admins can change many of them from the \ admin menu's Config section, with no mod needed on anyone's PC. Our VEIN console commands guide lists them with their defaults and explains how to set them.

Things that do still need a mod: carry weights, container and vehicle storage sizes, stack sizes, and moving furniture that the game won't let you move.

Troubleshooting

  • The game crashes on the main menu after a patch. An outdated mod. Remove your mods, confirm the game starts, then add updated ones back one at a time.
  • The warning about mods won't go away. That's expected. Since 0.024 Hotfix 2 VEIN warns you whenever it detects mods. It isn't an error.
  • A storage mod works in single-player but not on the server. The server doesn't have the mod, or has a different version. See the dedicated server section above.
  • A UE4SS mod does nothing. Check you installed the experimental UE4SS build the mod asks for, and that the mod's folder sits directly in ue4ss\Mods, not in a subfolder.
  • Your bug report got closed. Ramjet asks players to remove all mods and reproduce a bug before reporting it, and so do most mod authors.
