Palworld Leather: Ranch Farming and Drops

Leather comes from a Ranch with Surfent, or from drops. The ranch setup, the Pals that produce it, and what leather is actually needed for.

Palworld

Leather has no rocks, no nodes and no coordinates — it comes off Pals. Sixty-plus species drop it when defeated, captured or butchered, and one Pal produces it forever from a Ranch. If you are short on leather right now, the fastest answer is to kill Melpaca near the Small Settlement; the permanent answer is a Surfent in a Ranch.

The real answer is a Surfent Ranch

Surfent is the only Pal that generates Leather in a Ranch. At Ranch level 1 it produces 1 Leather per cycle and at level 10 it produces 3–10. One Surfent turns leather from a chore into background income, and a Ranch only costs 30 Wood, 20 Stone and 30 Fiber at Technology Level 5.

Best Pals to Farm for Leather

Leather drops at 100% probability from every Pal on this list — the only variable is quantity. These are the highest-yield species, with a fixed field boss location where one exists.

Pal Leather per kill Where to find it
Mammorest 5–10 Field boss, 189, -478 (Lv. 38)
Mammorest Cryst 5–10 Glacier region
Fenglope 3 Field boss, -258, -458 (Lv. 25)
Fenglope Lux 3 Field boss, -858, -1146 (Lv. 60, Feybreak)
Eikthyrdeer / Eikthyrdeer Terra 2–3 Forest, common
Kitsun / Kitsun Noct 2–3 Forest; Noct field boss at -847, -1307
Grizzbolt 2–3 Field boss, 56, -697 (Lv. 30)
Mossanda / Mossanda Lux 2–3 Lux field boss at 448, -181 (Lv. 31)
Pyrin / Pyrin Noct 2–3 Volcano
Chillet / Chillet Ignis 2–3 Grassland
Hartalis, Gildane, Starryon, Celesdir, Bastigor 2–3 Feybreak and later regions

Mammorest is the outright best target. Five to ten Leather per kill is double anything else, and it is a slow, stationary target that a mid-level party can farm repeatedly.

For early game, ignore all of that. Melpaca drops 1 Leather and spawns in packs right outside the Small Settlement at around 50, -460, at levels 5–7. It is the first leather most players ever see and it is enough to get Pelt Armor on.

Butchering works too

Every Pal on the list also yields Leather from the Meat Cleaver, on top of what it drops when defeated. If you are sitting on a box of duplicate Melpaca and Vixy, that is leather you already own.

Where Leather Goes

Leather is an armour material first and a saddle material second. The early armour ladder runs almost entirely through it:

Item Leather cost Unlock
Pelt Armor 10 Leather + 10 Ingot + 20 Fiber Technology Lv. 12
Heat Resistant Pelt Armor 15 Leather + 4 Flame Organ + 10 Ingot Technology Lv. 16
Cold Resistant Pelt Armor 15 Leather + 4 Ice Organ + 10 Ingot Technology Lv. 18
Metal Armor 30 Ingot + 10 Leather + 5 Cloth Technology Lv. 23
Heat Resistant Metal Armor 40 Ingot + 13 Leather + 8 Cloth + 8 Flame Organ Technology Lv. 25
Tarantriss Saddle 30 Leather + 50 Fiber + 30 Venom Gland + 40 Paldium Fragment Technology Lv. 20
Frostallion Noct Saddle 43 Leather + 43 Coralum Ingot + 72 Venom Gland + 96 Paldium Fragment Technology Lv. 62

Each armour piece also has four schematic tiers above the base recipe, and each tier costs more leather than the last — a Schematic 4 Pelt Armor takes 20 Leather instead of 10. If you are chasing legendary gear, budget for roughly double what the base table suggests.

Late-game accessories eat leather in larger blocks: the Islander's Tool Belt takes 40, and Hartalis's Talisman, Jetragon's Talisman and the Wandering Merchant Charm take 30 each.

Buy It, Don't Farm It

Leather is one of the few materials that is genuinely cheaper to buy than to farm once you have any gold at all. It costs 200 Gold from a Wandering Merchant and sells back for 20, and merchants carrying it are stationed at all three main settlements:

  • Small Settlement — the starting village
  • Duneshelter — the desert town
  • Fisherman's Point — Mount Obsidian

Caravan and dungeon merchants stock it too. Given that a single Mammorest run nets maybe eight Leather, buying fifty for 10,000 Gold is often the better trade — especially once you are selling Chromite at 150 a unit.

Grass and Volcano hard expeditions also return 10–20 Leather per successful run, which is the closest thing to free.

Server Angle

Leather is drop-table income, not node income, which means the setting that matters is EnemyDropItemRate rather than the collection rates. It multiplies everything Pals drop when defeated — leather included — and it is the single most effective dial for a server where people are trying to gear up a group at the same time.

EnemyDropItemRate defaults to 1.000000. Our Palworld Dedicated Server World Settings Explained guide covers it alongside every other rate, including the format rules that silently break the config file if you get them wrong. Those settings live in PalWorldSettings.ini on your own Palworld server — on a co-op world you are stuck with whatever was chosen when the world was created.

Common Questions

What is the fastest way to get leather in Palworld?

Kill Mammorest. It drops 5–10 per kill at 100%, double anything else, and there is a fixed Lv. 38 field boss at 189, -478. For a passive supply, put a Surfent in a Ranch.

Which Pal gives leather in a Ranch?

Surfent, and only Surfent. Output scales with Ranch level, from 1 Leather at level 1 up to 3–10 at level 10.

Where do I get leather early in Palworld?

Melpaca around the Small Settlement, at roughly 50, -460. They are level 5–7, drop 1 Leather each and spawn in numbers. Vixy, Fuack, Rushoar and Foxparks in the same starting area all drop 1 as well.

Can you buy leather in Palworld?

Yes — 200 Gold each from Wandering Merchants at the Small Settlement, Duneshelter and Fisherman's Point, as well as caravan and dungeon merchants.

Does butchering give leather?

Yes. Any Pal that drops Leather on defeat also yields it when butchered with a Meat Cleaver, which is worth doing with duplicates you would otherwise release.
