Best Minecraft Horror Mods

Horror mods that are currently maintained, which loader and version each targets, and what every player has to install for them to work.

Updated September 12, 2026
Minecraft

Most Minecraft horror mod lists are two years out of date and do not tell you. They open with From The Fog and Cave Dweller Reimagined — genuinely the two most famous mods in the genre — and quietly skip the part where neither one runs on the version of Minecraft you just installed.

Here is the state of the genre today. Searching Modrinth for horror mods that support Minecraft 26.2, the current release, returns fifteen results. The same search against 1.20.1, a version from 2023, returns 288. Horror is the slowest-moving corner of modding, because a stalker mod is mostly custom entity AI, sounds and rendering — three of the things that break hardest on an update.

So this list is organised by the only question that matters before you download anything: does it run, and on what? Every mod below was checked against its own project page, and where one is dead, it says so with the date. You get a shorter list than most pages give you, and one where nothing wastes your evening.

Versions and dates checked

Verified 12 September 2026 against Minecraft: Java Edition 26.2. Every loader, version and "last updated" date below comes from the mod's own Modrinth API record or CurseForge project page on that date. Download counts are Modrinth's unless stated — CurseForge counts for the same mod typically run three to four times higher, so never compare the two.

Horror Mods That Run on Minecraft 26.2

These have a published file that explicitly lists 26.2. The loader column is the loader of that file, not the loaders the project has ever supported — several projects are Fabric-only or NeoForge-only once you reach the current version.

Mod Loader (26.2 file) 26.2 file date Downloads Needs
Mutant Monsters NeoForge 31 Aug 2026 4.73M server + client
Server-Side Horror NeoForge 18 Jun 2026 236k server only
Spooky Doors NeoForge 8 Sep 2026 176k server + client
Stalker Creepers [FABRIC] Fabric 24 Jun 2026 137k server + client
Pumpkillager's Quest Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt 23 Aug 2026 87k server + client
Naraka Fabric 27 Aug 2026 71k server + client
A Breach Happened Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt 16 Jun 2026 70k server, client optional
DarkFear Fabric 26 Mar 2026 53k server only
Verity Dweller Forge 13 Aug 2026 39k server + client
The Murk – Darkness Consumes Fabric 24 Jun 2026 16k server + client
The Darkness Will Find You NeoForge 12 Jul 2026 14k server + client

Mutant Monsters is the pick if you only take one. It is the only mod in the genre with over a million downloads that is genuinely current — a 26.2.2 release build shipped on 31 August 2026 — and it does the thing horror mods are for: turns creepers, zombies and endermen into things that actually hunt you. It is the safe choice for a group on the current version.

Server-Side Horror and DarkFear solve the problem that ruins most modded horror nights. Both are server_side: required with the client side marked unsupported, so players join with a completely vanilla client and nothing installed — no version-matching arguments, no talking a friend through a mods folder. DarkFear is Fabric, Server-Side Horror is NeoForge, and both are configurable ambient horror rather than a single monster.

Verity Dweller is the closest thing to a maintained dweller mod that reaches 26.x. Note it is a 3.0.0 beta build, and its 26.2 file is Forge only.

Beta and release-candidate builds are common up here

Because so little has been updated for 26.2, several of the files above are marked beta rather than release — Naraka, A Breach Happened and Verity Dweller among them. That is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to back your world up before the first launch, not after.

The Famous Mods, and Where They Actually Stand

This is the section other lists leave out.

  • From The Fog — the Herobrine stalker mod, 5.51M downloads on Modrinth and over 17M on CurseForge. Its newest file is dated 8 October 2025 and targets 1.21.9 and 1.21.10. That is eleven months stale, two Minecraft eras behind, and there is no 26.x build. Not formally abandoned, but do not plan a current-version server around it.
  • The Man From The Fog — 4.72M downloads, and abandoned. Last file 29 November 2024, Forge, Minecraft 1.20.1 only. Both Modrinth and CurseForge agree on that date.
  • Cave Dweller Reimagined — the single biggest name in the genre at 15.2M CurseForge downloads, last updated 13 October 2023, Forge 1.20.1. The author's own project page says it plainly: "Mod is no longer supported, this mod was never mine to begin with and is just a combination of models/sounds."
  • The rest of the Cave Dweller lineage is also dead — Cave Dweller Fabric (Nov 2023), Cave Dweller Evolved (Dec 2023), Better Cave Dweller (Sep 2024), all 1.20.x. The only one still moving is Cave Dweller ReEvolved, a NeoForge continuation whose newest build (1.4-rc2, 11 September 2026) is a release candidate for 1.21.1, not 26.x.
  • The Graveyard — 5.36M downloads for the Fabric build, last file 24 February 2024, Minecraft 1.20.4; the Forge/NeoForge build stopped that April. Careful with the name: a different mod holds the plain the-graveyard slug on Modrinth.

Check the file date, not the project page's vibe

A project can look alive — active comments, a recent-looking changelog, thousands of followers — while its newest actual file is two years old. On Modrinth, open the Versions tab and read the date on the top row. That one number tells you more than the description does.

Still Alive, but Pinned to an Older Version

These are actively developed in 2026 and are excellent. None of them has a 26.2 build, so playing them means deliberately running an older Minecraft version — which is a perfectly reasonable choice, and the choice most serious horror servers make.

Mod Loader Minecraft Newest file Downloads
Goety – The Dark Arts Forge, NeoForge 1.20.1 28 Aug 2026 6.59M
The Broken Script NeoForge 1.21.1 28 Aug 2026 2.96M
The Knocker Fabric, Forge, NeoForge 1.20.1 15 Jun 2026 2.42M
Scape and Run: Parasites Forge 1.12.2 1 Sep 2026 1.79M
The Obsessed NeoForge 1.21.1 10 Sep 2026 1.10M
Horror Element Mod Forge 1.20.1 1 Aug 2026 517k
Sculk Horde Forge 1.20.1 22 Aug 2026 270k

The Obsessed shipped a release two days before this was written and is the most actively maintained large horror mod anywhere — it just lives on 1.21.1. Scape and Run: Parasites is the extreme case: a 1.79M-download mod getting updates in September 2026 for Minecraft 1.12.2, a 2017 release, with its whole addon ecosystem there too. That is not neglect but a decision to keep a 1.12.2 world alive, and if the parasite apocalypse is what you want, 1.12.2 is where you go.

Goety is dark fantasy — necromancy, souls, rituals — rather than jumpscares, and is the largest mod here by downloads. Sculk Horde is an end-game infestation that spreads and assimilates; also 1.20.1, also still shipping files.

Atmosphere Does More Than Monsters

The unglamorous truth about horror in Minecraft is that sound does most of the work. Two of these are the highest-download mods in this article by an order of magnitude, and both are client-side.

  • Sound Physics Remastered — 52.1M downloads, and it has a 26.2 file (Fabric and Quilt, 18 June 2026, marked beta). Real occlusion and reverb, so footsteps come from a direction and through walls. client_side: required, server_side: optional — it works on a vanilla server, and each player installs it for themselves.
  • Presence Footsteps — 38.5M downloads, 26.2 file dated 23 June 2026, Fabric and Quilt. server_side: unsupported — this one cannot go on a server. Per-block footstep sounds; subtle, and it does more for dread than it sounds like it should.
  • Tense Ambience — 548k downloads, client-only, and self-describes as built for horror modpacks. Newest file 3 January 2026 for 1.21.6–1.21.8, so it is eight months stale and has no 26.x build.
  • Enhanced Darkness — small (3.3k) but current, with a 26.2 Fabric file from 3 August 2026. Client-only.

Two mods we could not verify, and left out

Man's Best Friend and Don't Look At Me are recommended by several horror mod lists. Neither exists as a real project — no Modrinth entry, and the CurseForge page under that second name has 38 total downloads. They are omitted here rather than repeated. The same goes for the damage-overlay mod usually listed as Enhanced Visuals: the Modrinth slug of that name is a resource pack, and the CurseForge URL returns a 404, so no figures are quoted for it.

Running These on a Server

This is where a horror mod night usually falls apart, and the reason is structural rather than anybody's fault.

Almost every mod in the first two tables is client_side: required and server_side: required. The mod goes in the server's mods/ folder and in each player's mods/ folder, on the same loader, at the same mod version, for the same Minecraft version. Get one of those wrong and the player is rejected at connect time — usually with the error broken down in what "mismatched mod channel list" actually means.

Four consequences worth planning around:

  1. Pick the loader first, then the mods. Mixing a Fabric mod and a NeoForge mod is not a configuration problem, it is impossible. Note how the 26.2 table splits: Mutant Monsters is NeoForge, Stalker Creepers is Fabric.
  2. Pin the Minecraft version and leave it pinned. Updating Your Minecraft Server covers the 2026 numbering change and why 26.2 and 1.21.x are not interchangeable.
  3. Ship one mod list, not a suggestion. A modpack everyone installs in one click is cleanest — How to Install a Minecraft Modpack Server covers the CurseForge, Modrinth and FTB routes.
  4. Prefer server-side-only mods for casual groups. Server-Side Horror, DarkFear and A Breach Happened need nothing from the player, and for a group that will not reliably install anything that decides whether the server gets used.

A managed Minecraft server earns its place here because the world survives between sessions and the mod set lives in one place rather than in six people's launchers. How to install mods for Minecraft Java Edition covers the file drop on both sides.

Common Questions

Are there horror mods for Minecraft Bedrock?

Not these. Every mod on this page is Java Edition only, and a Bedrock client cannot load a Java mod under any circumstances — see is Minecraft crossplay for why. Bedrock has add-ons, which are a different thing with a different catalogue.

What is the best Minecraft version for horror mods?

1.20.1, by a wide margin — 288 horror mods support it against 15 on 26.2, and most of the famous ones never left it. 1.21.1 is the modern alternative, and it is where The Broken Script, The Obsessed and Cave Dweller ReEvolved live.

Forge, NeoForge or Fabric?

For horror specifically, Forge and NeoForge have the deeper catalogue — the big stalker and dimension mods are almost all on that side. Fabric holds the current-version and atmosphere end: Sound Physics Remastered, Presence Footsteps, DarkFear, Stalker Creepers.

Do these work in single-player?

Yes, and most were designed for it — the version and loader rules are identical, you just satisfy them once. Mining alone at the depth where diamonds actually spawn is where most of these do their worst work.

Is From The Fog dead?

Not declared dead, but it has shipped nothing since 8 October 2025 and has no 26.x build. Treat it as a reason to run 1.21.10 rather than as an option on the current version.
