Best Valheim Server Mods That Work After 1.0 (2026)

Which Valheim mods actually work after the 1.0 update. 26 mods confirmed rebuilt since 9 September 2026, checked against Thunderstore, with dates.

Updated September 11, 2026
Valheim

Valheim 1.0 shipped on 9 September 2026. Two days later, the modding ecosystem has largely caught up — but not evenly, and not in the way most "best mods" lists will tell you.

This page is a snapshot with a timestamp on it. Every mod below was checked against the Thunderstore package API on 11 September 2026 at 21:44 UTC. Where a mod has been rebuilt since 1.0 landed, it says so. Where it has not, it says that too — and it does not pretend that means the mod is broken.

What "works after 1.0" can and cannot mean

Iron Gate does not ship official mod support, so nobody — not us, not Thunderstore, not the mod authors — can certify a mod against 1.0. What is verifiable is whether an author has published a new build since the update. That is the strongest public evidence available, and it is what this page sorts on.

A mod rebuilt after 9 September is evidence the author has been in the code against the 1.0 binary. A mod not rebuilt since is not evidence of anything — plenty of simple plugins survive a game update untouched. Treat "not yet rebuilt" as unknown, not broken.

The short answer

The ecosystem moved fast. As of 11 September 2026:

  • BepInEx, the loader everything else depends on, was rebuilt on launch day itselfdenikson/BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2350, published 9 September 2026 at 12:30 UTC. This was the blocker, and it is gone.
  • Jotunn 2.30.0, the library a large share of the ecosystem depends on, followed the same day at 21:49 UTC.
  • Of 10,801 packages in Thunderstore's Valheim catalogue, 799 have had a new version published on or after 9 September. 418 of those non-modpack, non-deprecated packages now declare a dependency on the 1.0-day BepInEx build specifically.
  • Version uploads by day: 340 on 9 September, 533 on 10 September, 335 so far on 11 September.

So: yes, you can run a modded Valheim 1.0 server today. The caveat is which mods, and that is the rest of this page.

What Iron Gate actually says

Their 1.0 FAQ, live text as read on 11 September 2026:

"Just like always, it takes some time for mods to be updated to be compatible with the base game. Since we don't have any official mod support, we cannot guarantee that any mods will be functional when 1.0 releases. Since we have no mod support on PC, there will also be no mod support for consoles for 1.0, and there will be no Steam Workshop featured."

Two things follow from that second sentence, and they matter more than the disclaimer does.

Console players cannot install mods — at all

Valheim 1.0 is on Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, and those players have no way to load a plugin. If your group is mixed, anything requiring a client-side install will lock console players out — and a mod the server insists both sides run can stop them connecting entirely. Build around server-side mods instead. There is a section for exactly this below, and Is Valheim Crossplay? covers who can join what.

How to read the table

The Side column reports Thunderstore's own category tags, which are set by the mod author:

  • Server — tagged server-side only. No player installs anything.
  • Client — tagged client-side. Each player needs it.
  • Client + Server — tagged both. Usually means both sides need a matching copy, occasionally means it runs on either. The mod's own page is the authority; check it before you commit a group to one.

Download totals are across all versions, rounded. They indicate popularity and nothing about 1.0 compatibility.

Three entries that need context

Equipment and Quick Slots flipped status. Older guides — including our own BepInEx guide as it stood in August — listed RandyKnapp/EquipmentAndQuickSlots as deprecated. As of 11 September 2026 it is not flagged deprecated on Thunderstore and has shipped 3.1.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 across 9–11 September. The deprecation was reversed and the mod was rebuilt for 1.0. If you read otherwise, that page is out of date.

ValheimPlus still means the fork. The original ValheimPlus/ValheimPlus is deprecated and frozen at December 2022. Grantapher's fork is the live one, was rebuilt to 10.1.0 on 11 September, and now depends on the 1.0-day BepInEx build. It is still published as ValheimPlus_Grantapher_Temporary and still calls itself a stopgap — it works, just do not treat it as permanent infrastructure.

Take the right ConfigurationManager. The widely-linked Azumatt/Official_BepInEx_ConfigurationManager has not been updated since June 2025. shudnal/ConfigurationManager was rebuilt on 11 September. Prefer the latter right now.

If your group includes console players

These are tagged server-side only on Thunderstore and rebuilt since 1.0, so nobody installs anything client-side. That is the entire mod surface available to an Xbox, PS5 or Switch 2 player. 42 server-side-only packages have been rebuilt since launch; these are the most-downloaded.

Mod Rebuilt Version Downloads What it does
Expand World Prefabs 11 Sep 1.60.0 ~151k Rules for objects being spawned, destroyed and changed
ServersideQoL 11 Sep 2.0.7 ~39k Quality-of-life with no client install. Its own description states it is "compatible with vanilla/console (e.g. XBox, PS, Switch) clients" — auto-sort chests, refuel smelters, portal hub
Cron Job 10 Sep 1.14.0 ~14k Scheduled commands on the server

Server-side mods are the low-drama option generally

Even on an all-PC server, a server-side mod is one install you control rather than five installs you have to chase. It is also the only category that survives a player joining from a console.

Not yet rebuilt — unknown, not broken

These are popular, not deprecated, and have not published a build since 1.0. That is genuinely all that is known. Some may work untouched; some may not load. Test before you commit a server to one, and check the Thunderstore page for a newer version than what is listed here.

Mod Last updated Downloads Notes
AzuCraftyBoxes 2 Aug 2026 ~1.5M Craft from nearby chests
AzuExtendedPlayerInventory 31 Aug 2026 ~1.4M Extra rows, equipment and quick slots
r2modman 21 Aug 2026 ~10.5M Client mod manager. Largely game-version independent, so this date matters less than most
Recycle N Reclaim 19 Aug 2026 ~656k Recycle items back to resources
AzuAutoStore 20 Feb 2026 ~508k Auto-deposit into nearby chests
Build Camera (Custom Hammers Edition) 1 Feb 2026 ~469k Free-fly build camera
Better Networking 12 Nov 2023 ~259k Compression and send-rate tuning. Nearly three years untouched — the weakest bet here

Azumatt's catalogue is a live case in point

Azumatt maintains 144 Valheim packages and is clearly active — two were updated on 11 September. The large inventory and container mods above simply have not been reached yet. "Author is inactive" and "this mod has not been rebuilt yet" are different claims, and only the second one is true here. Watch those pages rather than replacing them in a hurry.

Deprecated — do not install these

Thunderstore flags abandoned packages itself. All three are still flagged as of 11 September 2026:

Package Flagged Frozen at Instead
ValheimPlus/ValheimPlus Deprecated Dec 2022 The Grantapher fork above
RandyKnapp/Auga Deprecated Nov 2023 No full replacement exists. ZenDragon/AugaLite is maintained but deliberately a small subset
gittywithexcitement/Build_Camera Deprecated Sep 2021 Build Camera (Custom Hammers Edition), though see the unknown list above

Getting these onto your server

Full instructions are in How to install mods for your Valheim server — this page is the shortlist, that one is the procedure. In brief, on a GameServerKings server:

  1. Back up first, from the panel's Backups tab. See how to create a backup.
  2. Set the Modding Framework Startup variable (MOD_FRAMEWORK) to BepInEx and restart. Values are Vanilla, BepInEx and ValheimPlus, capitalised exactly as shown. There is no SERVER_TYPE variable on a Valheim server, whatever older guides say.
  3. After the restart, BepInEx/plugins/ exists at the server root. Upload plugin .dll files there over SFTP.
  4. Install every dependency a mod lists, at the versions it lists.
  5. Restart, then check the console for the plugin load lines.

The mod folder and the save folder are not in the same place

BepInEx/ sits at the server root. Your worlds do not — they live in .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/, alongside adminlist.txt. Since 1.0 a world is a folder in worlds_local/, not the old .db/.fwl pair. Do not go looking for your save next to the plugins, and do not restore one into the wrong place. Valheim save location and the 1.0 world folder format has the detail.

Mods and achievements are now linked in writing

Iron Gate's Hotfix 1.0.10 & 1.0.12 (11 September 2026) refers to achievements being opted into "even if you have used devcommands or mods" — the first time mods have been connected to the achievement block in an Iron Gate document. No list of which mods trigger it has been published. Valheim's cheat flag and achievements has the detail and the opt-out.

A bad plugin can corrupt a world

This is the failure people actually hit, not malware. Back up before you install, add mods one at a time so you know which one broke things, and keep a known-good copy of the world folder off the server.

FAQ

Do Valheim mods work after the 1.0 update?

Many do, and more every day. BepInEx itself was rebuilt on launch day (5.4.2350, 9 September 2026) and 799 Valheim packages have published a new version since — 340 on launch day, 533 the day after. The honest framing is per-mod rather than blanket: check the Thunderstore page's last-updated date, and prefer anything rebuilt since 9 September.

Does a mod that has not been updated since 9 September mean it is broken?

No, and this is the most common mistake in mod lists. It means nobody has published new evidence. Simple plugins frequently survive a game update with no change at all. It is a reason to test on a backup world rather than a reason to uninstall. If the server itself stops booting after an update, Valheim version mismatch and update problems has the recovery path.

Can Xbox, PS5 or Switch 2 players use mods?

No. Iron Gate's FAQ states there is no mod support for consoles at 1.0 and no Steam Workshop. Console players can still join a modded server if the mods are server-side only — see the section above. Anything that needs a client install is unavailable to them, and a mod that forces a version match can block them from connecting.

Which mods should a brand-new 1.0 server start with?

The Grantapher ValheimPlus fork if you want broad configurable tweaks, Server Devcommands for admin control, and a backup routine. That is enough to run a server. Add content mods like EpicLoot once the world is stable, one at a time.

Do I need Jotunn?

Only if a mod lists it, but many do — EpicLoot among them. It was rebuilt to 2.30.0 on 9 September. Install the exact version the dependency line names.

Why do some rebuilt mods still list an older BepInEx version as a dependency?

Thunderstore dependency strings pin the version a mod was built against, and authors do not always bump them. EpicLoot 0.14.3, for instance, still names BepInEx 5.4.2333 while being rebuilt on 11 September. Install the newest BepInEx pack — it is backward compatible with those pins.

How often does this list change?

Fast, right now. Every figure here carries the 11 September 2026 timestamp for that reason. Before installing anything, open its Thunderstore page and read the date yourself.
