Valheim Cheat Flag: Do Cheats Disable Achievements?
Valheim 1.0's cheat flag marks characters, worlds and items. What triggers it, what "summoned through cheating means" costs you, and the 1.0.12 opt-out.
You picked something up, and the game told you your achievements had stopped. Or you looked in your inventory and found a grey italic line under an item reading "This item was summoned through cheating means." Nothing you did caused it, and now you want to know what it costs.
Valheim 1.0 shipped achievements on 9 September 2026, and with them a cheat-detection system that marks characters, worlds and individual items. On a dedicated server it behaves differently from single-player in one way that matters a lot: the flag lands on the world save as well as the character, so it is a server-wide problem rather than a personal one. This page covers what triggers it, what each kind of flag costs, and what Iron Gate changed about it on 11 September 2026 — two days after launch.
For the command syntax itself, Valheim Console Commands is the reference. This page is about the consequences.
The short version
A cheated item in your bag is a temporary state — throw every flagged item away and achievements come back. A character or world that has actually run a cheat command was described by Iron Gate as "permanently locked". As of hotfix 1.0.12 on 11 September that is no longer permanent: Iron Gate added a devcommand that opts you back in. Details below, including which platforms have it.
"This item was summoned through cheating means"
If that line is what brought you here, you are in the mildest category, and it is reversible.
Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ describes the mechanic like this:
"Items that have been spawned in will also be marked in this way. If a non-cheated player character picks up a cheated item, they will enter a temporary cheat state. Temporarily cheated characters are locked out from unlocking achievements while in this state, and can become eligible for achievements again if they throw out all cheated items from their inventory. Cheated items will be visibly marked as such."
So:
- The item carries a persistent flag, set when it was spawned. It keeps that flag forever, through chests, trades and the ground.
- Holding one puts your character into a temporary cheat state. Your character is not permanently marked by picking it up.
- Getting rid of every flagged item ends the state and makes you eligible again.
- The 1.0.12 hotfix added "a popup message to make it more clear when you can receive achievements again after them being temporarily disabled", so on current builds the game tells you when you are clean.
The catch on a shared world is that "every flagged item" includes ones you did not notice. Crafting with a flagged material produces a flagged result, so a spawned stack of iron can quietly contaminate a chest, a forge queue and four players' armour before anybody reads a tooltip.
Where to look for flagged items
Your own inventory first, then the chest you last pulled materials from, then anything you crafted since. The tooltip is the only reliable marker — the item name, icon and stats are identical to a legitimate one.
Players reported clean worlds producing flagged items on launch day
On 9 September, players on fresh 1.0 worlds with no mods reported that ordinary drops from Greylings and Greydwarves — and wood and stone they had gathered themselves — were arriving already marked as cheated. Two separate players in the same thread described it independently, one of them on a self-hosted server with no mods and new characters. Iron Gate's 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 patch notes do not mention this, and we have not reproduced it ourselves, so treat it as an open community report rather than a documented behaviour. If it happens on your server, the item-level fix below still applies.
The three kinds of flag
Iron Gate's FAQ answer to "What if I'm playing with cheats?" is the only document that sets out the rules. Quoted in full, as it read on 11 September 2026:
"There is a system in place to prevent achievements from being unlocked if you have cheats enabled. Some devcommands, such as “freefly” will be exceptions, but using most commands (such as “spawn”) will place a flag on your current character and world save, informing you that it is permanently locked from getting any achievements. Characters that have used cheats before 1.0 will also be marked in this way. There will also be a confirmation required to enter a cheated state after 1.0, to prevent you from accidentally marking out your character and world as cheated. Items that have been spawned in will also be marked in this way. If a non-cheated player character picks up a cheated item, they will enter a temporary cheat state. Temporarily cheated characters are locked out from unlocking achievements while in this state, and can become eligible for achievements again if they throw out all cheated items from their inventory. Cheated items will be visibly marked as such. Some world modifiers such as hammer-mode will also block certain achievements. Hammer-mode counts as a temporary cheat."
Unpacked into the three things that can actually be marked:
| What gets marked | Trigger | Duration Iron Gate describes | How you clear it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your character | Running most cheat commands. freefly is named as an exception |
"Permanently locked" | Nothing documented before 1.0.12. Since 1.0.12, an opt-in devcommand — see below |
| The world save | The same command, at the same moment | "Permanently locked" | Nothing documented. A new world is the only clean route |
| An item | Being spawned by a cheat command | Permanent on the item; temporary on whoever carries it | Throw every flagged item away |
Two details in that quote do most of the damage on a server.
The first is "and world save". Achievements are normally a single-player concern; this one is not. One admin running spawn once marks the world for everyone who plays on it, and a fresh character joining a marked world does not escape it.
The second is that the marking is retroactive: "Characters that have used cheats before 1.0 will also be marked in this way." A character that spawned a few stacks of wood in 2022 to repair a bug arrived at 1.0 already flagged.
Achievements track from install, so nothing is backfilled
The same FAQ answer says the system "will begin to track statistics from the moment you download the 1.0 version", using Eikthyr as its example: killing him 500 times before 1.0 counts for nothing. There is no grace period during which cheating is free — the clock starts at install, not at your first achievement.
What changed on 11 September
Two days after launch, Iron Gate shipped Hotfix 1.0.10 & 1.0.12 and quietly removed the word "permanent" from the picture:
"Achievements can be now be opted into even if you have used devcommands or mods by the new devcommand "yes i used devcommands but i want my achievements anyway" (but remove all the blank spaces)"
The announcement text is blunter about the intent:
"The fixes include a function to let you opt into using achievements even though you have been blocked from doing so because of previous usage of devcommands. We will leave it to your own judgement whether or not to activate this function – Oden will surely know if you use it dishonourably."
Three things about this are worth being precise on, because they change the answer to "do I need a new world?":
The command name is that sentence with the spaces removed. Iron Gate published it spoiler-tagged on Steam and spelled out the spaces rule on its own site; the Steam copy gives the literal token, which is what you type:
yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanywayIt is a devcommand, so everything on Valheim Console Commands about enabling the console and
devcommandsapplies — including that a vanilla dedicated server refuses devcommands, so each player runs this on their own client. The phrase is "devcommands or mods". This is the first time Iron Gate has connected mod usage to the achievement block in writing. The 1.0 FAQ never mentions mods in this context, and Iron Gate has published no list of which mods trigger it — so if you run BepInEx, note the sentence and do not extrapolate past it.
It is in patch 1.0.12, which is Steam only. Iron Gate says these fixes "will arrive to all other platforms shortly" and that crossplay is unaffected. If your players are on PS5, Xbox or Switch 2, they do not have this yet.
Switch 2 crossplay is broken at the time of writing
The same post says the patch could not be uploaded to Switch 2, so Switch 2 clients cannot currently play with other platforms. Iron Gate's documented workaround is to roll Valheim — or the Valheim Dedicated Server — back to the
default_oldbranch under Game Versions & Betas in Steam, which also means running without these fixes. Valheim Version Mismatch and Update Problems covers branch pinning on a server.
On a dedicated server
Here is the part general cheat guides get wrong, and it cuts both ways.
Vanilla dedicated servers already refuse cheat commands. spawn, god, fly and the rest are blocked on a dedicated server no matter who you are — admin rights do not override it. Admin commands (kick, ban, save, setworldmodifier, setworldpreset, resetworldkeys) are not cheats and work normally, with no achievement consequence at all.
So on a stock server — including a hosted Valheim server from your panel — the flag does not arrive by an admin typing something. It arrives two other ways:
- A mod that lifts the restriction. The only established route is Server devcommands by JereKuusela, a BepInEx plugin that, in the author's words, "Allows devcommands and utilities for server admins." Install it and the commands work — and so does the flag. See How to install mods for your Valheim server for the panel's Modding Framework field and getting plugins into
BepInEx/plugins/. - Players carrying it in. A character marked on someone else's world arrives marked. An item spawned elsewhere arrives flagged. Neither requires anything to be installed on your server.
Route 2 is the one to plan for, because you do not control it.
You will see it claimed that cheats do not affect achievements at all
Several popular Valheim command references still say cheats have never disabled Steam achievements, and others say they are disabled "for that session". Both predate 1.0. The FAQ quoted above is Iron Gate's own wording, it names
spawnspecifically, and it says the flag lands on the character and the world save. Equally, you will see it said that dedicated servers simply do not allow devcommands and stop there — true of a vanilla server, but incomplete: the mod route exists, and the flag reaches your world through players either way.
Cleaning flagged items off a server
If the problem is items rather than characters, there is a server-side option. NoCheatItems is a BepInEx plugin built for Valheim 1.0 that deletes items the game has marked — it reads the game's own ItemData.m_cheated flag — from loaded containers, world drops, item stands and online player inventories, with a nocheatitems_sweep console command for an immediate pass.
Its own documentation is clear about the limit, and it matches Iron Gate's model exactly:
"This does not un-flag a character or world that already used devcommands. It only destroys cheated items."
That is the right mental model for the whole system. Items are cleanable. Characters and worlds are not, except through the 1.0.12 opt-in. Check Best Valheim Server Mods That Work After 1.0 before adding anything, and take a backup first.
Hammer-mode and world modifiers
The FAQ's last two sentences are: "Some world modifiers such as hammer-mode will also block certain achievements. Hammer-mode counts as a temporary cheat."
That is the entire published guidance on modifiers. It does not list which other modifiers qualify, and it is a temporary state rather than a permanent flag.
What Iron Gate has not actually said
The FAQ names "hammer-mode". Iron Gate's dedicated server guide separately lists
Hammeras the last of seven valid-presetvalues — "Normal, Casual, Easy, Hard, Hardcore, Immersive, Hammer" — in a document dated 11 April 2024 that predates achievements entirely and does not mention them once. No Iron Gate document connects the two names, and we are not going to tell you they are the same setting on the strength of a matching word. If achievements matter on your world, check in game rather than assuming — and if you want a free-build server, run it as a separate world you have already written off. Valheim World Modifiers on a Dedicated Server covers the-preset,-modifierand-setkeyarguments in full.
confirmcheats and achievements
Valheim 1.0's patch notes list nineteen new dev commands, and publish names only. Two of them are obviously relevant here:
confirmcheats achievements The FAQ does say "There will also be a confirmation required to enter a cheated state after 1.0, to prevent you from accidentally marking out your character and world as cheated", and the names line up with that. But Iron Gate published no description of either command — the patch notes say the "descriptions [are] found in console 'help' command" — so we are not going to tell you what they do. Run help in your own build; it is the authority, and it is current in a way no guide can be. The other seventeen names are listed in Valheim Console Commands.
What to actually do
- If you have a flagged item: throw out every marked stack, including anything crafted from one. Watch for the 1.0.12 popup confirming you are eligible again.
- If your world is flagged and achievements matter: on Steam, the 1.0.12 opt-in command is now the documented route. On console platforms, a new world is still the only clean answer until the patch lands there.
- If you are starting fresh for 1.0 anyway: the Deep North only generates in unexplored terrain, so the world decision is usually being made for other reasons too — Valheim 1.0: What Changes for Server Owners has that checklist.
- If you run mods: note Iron Gate's "devcommands or mods" wording and decide deliberately. Best Valheim Server Mods That Work After 1.0 tracks what has been rebuilt.
- Either way: back the world up before you experiment. Backups and Managing your Valheim server cover the routine.
None of this is an argument against using cheat commands. Restoring something a bug ate, testing a build, running an event — all still legitimate uses, and the admin and moderation commands are untouched by any of it. It is simply a choice with a price attached, and since 11 September the price is refundable on Steam.
FAQ
Do console commands disable achievements in Valheim 1.0?
Most of them do. Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ says using most commands — spawn is its own example — places a flag on "your current character and world save", described as "permanently locked from getting any achievements". freefly is named as an exception, and admin commands such as kick, ban and save are not cheats. Since hotfix 1.0.12 on 11 September 2026 there is a devcommand that opts you back in on Steam.
What does "this item was summoned through cheating means" mean?
The item was created by a cheat command at some point and carries a permanent flag. Holding it puts your character into a temporary cheat state that blocks achievements. Throw out every flagged item — including things crafted from flagged materials — and you become eligible again.
I picked up a cheated item. Is my character ruined?
No. Picking up a flagged item is the temporary state, not the permanent one. Only running a cheat command marks a character permanently. Get rid of the items and the block lifts; on 1.0.12 and later the game shows a popup telling you when.
Do world modifiers disable achievements in Valheim?
Some do. The FAQ says "some world modifiers such as hammer-mode will also block certain achievements" and counts hammer-mode as a temporary cheat. It does not list which others qualify, and it does not connect hammer-mode to the Hammer value of -preset.
What is the Valheim cheat flag?
The marker Valheim 1.0 applies to a character, a world save or an individual item once cheats are involved. Character and world flags were described as permanent and block achievements on that world for everyone; item flags are permanent on the item but only temporarily affect whoever carries it.
What is confirmcheats in Valheim?
One of nineteen dev commands added in 1.0. Iron Gate published the name with no description, and the FAQ separately mentions a confirmation step before entering a cheated state. The names line up, but nothing published states they are the same thing — run help in game for the current description.
Can I remove the cheat flag from my character or world?
On Steam, yes, since hotfix 1.0.12 on 11 September 2026: Iron Gate added a devcommand that opts you back into achievements "even if you have used devcommands or mods". On other platforms the fix is listed as arriving "shortly". Before 1.0.12 there was no documented way to clear it.
Can I spawn items on my dedicated server?
Not in vanilla. Cheat commands are refused on dedicated servers regardless of admin status. The Server devcommands mod by JereKuusela, on BepInEx, is the established route — and anything it spawns arrives flagged. Valheim Console Commands covers the setup.
